About the Item

NOTE: SHIPS FROM LUXEMBOURG Egon Digon uses naturalistic plant motives carved in gilded wood intertwined through discarded once-functional rusted objects, as well as distorted carved grids, to represent our interaction with the environment and the desire to break free from social constraints. Digon was born into the renowned woodcarving tradition of Val Gardena, Italy, where he continues to live today. He trained and worked under his father, but after several years he began to forge his own path as an artist. Initially, Digon’s artworks were based on naturalistic representations. Over time his approach developed towards an original and authentic abstraction while remaining faithful to his primary medium, wood. Digon’s traditional training is evident in the exquisite craftsmanship of his carving. The artist describes the process of working as follows: “In my work you have to stroke the form until it appears however it wants.” The artwork is always born out of a chunk of solid wood. As the handling of wood is very labour-intensive, it demands concentration, love and sufferance. Several emotions emerge in this long period of evolution. Digon himself does not know where these emotions will lead him. During the creative process, there is a permanent dialogue between the artist and the emerging artwork. In this dialogue the deepest emotions emerge, which in consequence give a spirit to the artwork. In recent years Digon has developed a technique for carving solid wood so that it resembles soft foam rubber. By rupturing the solidity of the rigid base material and transforming it into what appears to be malleable object, the viewer is caught in an artful deception. Digon’s works start with a geometric grid, which he distorts into different positions. For Digon, this distortion of geometry is symbolic of our times: We are increasingly channelled into systems from which the artist desires to escape. Digon’s art history influences – Minimalism and De Stijl – provide further insight into his artistic intent. These movements were a reaction against mass consumerism and a need to impose some order onto a chaotic society. Here we see Digon’s use of discarded previously-utilitarian objects and the grid as his own way to make sense of contemporary society’s challenges and corrupted values. For Digon, his artworks represent hope and the possibility of escape: grids start to break apart or yield; the delicate leaves of nature begin to reclaim what was once dug from the earth.
