About the Item
Fritz Diller (full name Johann Georg Friedrich Diller) (January 19, 1875 in Gerthausen; October 5, 1946 in Munich) was a German sculptor, medalist, and porcelain artist. He was the eldest son of farmer Johann Diller and his wife Johanna, née Bittorf. In 1880, his parents and his three younger siblings emigrated to the United States. He stayed with relatives on his father's side and grew up there without his family, whom he never saw again. Before completing his two-year military service as a reserve recruit in a field artillery regiment, beginning in October 1895 and ending in 1897, he completed an apprenticeship as a woodcarver near Meiningen. He later lived and worked in this city for several years as an apprentice. In 1909, he and his family moved to Bad Cannstatt. His youngest son, Helmut, was born there at the end of 1911 and later became an artist himself. Shortly after his birth, the family moved to Esslingen am Neckar at the beginning of 1912, where they lived for several years in the newly founded Neckarhalde Homestead Cooperative. During the First World War, he was stationed in Ulm. During this time, from May 1916, he was assigned to the wounded school at Langestrasse 38 as a teacher, teaching plaster casting, porcelain painting, modeling, and glass etching. He was discharged from military service at the end of 1918. In 1920, he moved to Moosheim (Bad Saulgau), and in the early 1930s, finally to Lochhausen (Munich), where he lived until his death. Diller primarily designed animal figures in porcelain and bronze, including reliefs. These included at least 21 dogs, red deer, horses, as well as ducks, bears, wild boars, and others. He was a sought-after artist, working primarily for manufacturers such as Rosenthal, WMF, Metzler & Ortloff, and Nymphenburg. He also provided a few designs for Hutschenreuther. He was a hunter himself, had contacts with dog breeding associations, and served as a judge at pedigree dog shows, including for many years for the Riedlingen Dog Lovers' Association.
