Giorgio De Chirico
Il Travatore

About the Item

A fine polished bronze figural sculpture by Greek / Italian artist Giorgio De Chirico (1888-1978). De Chirico was born from Italian parents in Volos, Greece, and when his father died in 1905, his mother took him and his brother to Munich where he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, where he became devoted to Nietzsche and art which disdained the real world for fantasy and dreams. He was influenced by Max Klinger and especially the Swiss-German painter Arnold Bocklin. In 1909 de Chirico moved to Florence and in 1911 to Paris. He became known as a painter, graphic artist, sculptor, theatrical designer, and author, but most for his pre-surrealist painting. This bronze figure known as “Il Travatore” is signed on base G. De Chirico, with stamp “Amici Fond, G.I. D. Chirico” on the left and numbered X/XXX (10/30) with the Fonderia Tesconi Pietrasanta foundry mark on the right. Slight tarnish, remnants of polish, and some minor surface rubs around the head. Dimensions: 8 ½” H x 4” W x 3 ¼” D. Ref: 58
