Jessica Joslin
"Percival" antique hardware and findings turtle sculpture

2018

About the Item

Jessica Joslin Percival, 2018 Antique hardware and findings, bone, turtle shell, glove leather, glass eyes 4.5 x 3 x 1.75 " Influenced by the historical phenomenon of the Wunderkammer, erudite collections of natural history, geology, ethnography, archeology, historical relics and antiquities, and the Victorian penchant for the invention of mechanical technology and the exploration of science through the collecting of naturalia, Jessica Joslin creates exquisite and intricate creature-sculptures from a fusion of bone, brass, antique hardware and other scavenged treasures. The artist is always on the search for material, as she explained: “I find things anywhere that I find myself…in obscure junk shops, flea markets, attics, taxidermy supply houses, specialty hardware distributors… or walking through the woods.” Her creatures have clearly not lived out any biological or evolutionary imperative. They are products of a more treacherous environment: mankind and our civilization. It is human detritus that makes up their feathers and beaks, bright unblinking eyes and onyx toenails, silver wings, and the soft, inviting leather or fabric of their ears or bellies. By encrusting the skeletons with so many charming discarded riches, Joslin reminds us of our capacity to treasure an object, only to cast it aside when something else catches our eye. Joslin received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Regarding the study of animal anatomy, she describes herself as an intrigued autodidact. She has a strong affinity for animals and creates replica bones for any of her works that reference protected or endangered species. For any sculptures that incorporate real animal bones, she works with licensed osteological suppliers, whose specimens are legally and ethically sourced.

  • "Pantaloncini: Work No. 012 (Emma)" sculpture with pins
    By Angela Ellsworth
    Located in Phoenix, AZ
Angela Ellsworth Pantaloncini: Work No. 012 (Emma), 2017 47,160 pearl corsage pins, colored dress pins, fabric, steel 25”h x 18"w x 12”d Angela Ellsworth is an interdisciplinary artist who works in sculpture, drawing, installation, and performance. Her solo and collaborative work draws on a broad range of topics: illness (particularly her personal battle with cancer in her twenties), physical fitness, endurance, religious traditions (influenced by her family’s history and especially her great, great, grandfather, Lorenzo Snow, who was the fifth prophet and president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints), and social issues (such as queerness and non-heteronormative relationships in contemporary society as well as the tradition of polygamy with the early history of Mormonism.) Addressing the secret languages pulsing beneath officially-sanctioned accounts of history and religion, Ellsworth’s mysterious, entrancing objects and performances draw lines of communication between her Mormon ancestry and the work of 19th and 20th century female mystics, delving into an unspoken realm of gestural language, psychic connection, and sensuous geometry. In 2014, she founded the Museum of Walking, which is committed to conversations about land, action and site within the context of art. Ellsworth holds a MFA in painting and performance from Rutgers University and a BA in photography and painting from Hampshire College. Her work has been shown internationally including at The Getty Center (CA), Museum of Contemporary Art (Sydney, Australia), Zacheta National Gallery of Art (Warsaw, Poland), National Review of Live Art...
