About the Item

figure is 18.5 inches high Total overall height is 27.5 inches with the golf club fully extended. This is a wooden sculpture of a female golfer wearing a blue top, white skirt and saddle shoes. She is whittled out of pine and painted with acrylic. About the artist: While John Cross invariably describes what he does as “whittling,” eminent critics call his work …”woodcarving in the finest folk art tradition.” The majority of his figures are men, alone or in groups, engaged in the main in athletics or everyday activities. Unassuming in subject matter, they are deceptively simple at first glance. To the discerning eye, however, the sophistication of each piece is soon evident. Sharply defined, stripped of extraneous detail, these carvings create an impression of such strength and solidity that one can forget that the figures are only 12” to 18” tall. No unnecessary embellishment impinges on pure shape, impeccably executed. Self-taught, he started to whittle as a small boy and has hardly stopped since. Wherever he finds himself—in a bank or bus line, waiting for elevators or walking in New York City—he slices surely and un-self consciously into pieces of sugar pine, often as little as an inch in length; later, at leisure, the separate segments –arms, legs and various accessories –will be glued together to form figures and groups. Sugar pine is his sole material. “Hard wood, he explains, “is too imposing and tends to direct the work.” Instead of the chisels and mallets required for mahogany or teak, he employs a penknife, by now almost a permanent appendage and as sensitive as his own hand. According to John Cross, his whittling is an act of “pure pleasure.” Happily, his work evokes exactly the same emotion for those who view it. Work by John Cross can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian, The Museum of American Folk Art and the American Museum in Bath, England and his sculptures are continually included in important contemporary art shows throughout the world. He was commissioned by Absolut Vodka to create a piece, “Absolut Cross” for their on-going ad series.
