JONATHAN SILVER (1937-1992) Standing Woman, 1991 Bronze with dark brown patina 23 x 7 x 6 ½ inches Signed, dated, and numbered at base: J. Silver 91 / 2/6 From an edition of six PROVENANCE Victoria Munroe Gallery, New York, New York Sculptor Jonathan Silver was born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1937. He received a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters degree in art history from Columbia University, where he also studied sculpture. He taught art at the New York Studio School, Parsons School of Design in New York and was a full-time tenured faculty at Montclair State College in New Jersey for many years. Throughout his career, he wrote and lectured on art and alternated between teaching art history and sculpture. In the late 1960s, he taught at the University of North Carolina, at Greensboro. Silver did not begin to exhibit his work until 1976, when he was nearly forty, and he had his first one-man show at the New York Studio School in 1979. In the second half of the 1980’s, he became known for ambitious installation pieces whose exaggerated, fragmented figures were influenced by both Giacometti and Rodin. Silver had a retrospective exhibition at the Montclair Museum of Art in 1988, which included major works of sculpture and installation pieces in bronze and plaster. He also showed with the Grimaldi Gallery in Baltimore from 1980-1985. In 1991 he exhibited a piece titled The New Gretchen: Never Again, at the Victoria Munroe Gallery in Manhattan. The work centered on a roughly modeled, life-size sculpture of an angry, heavyset woman teetering on the edge of an examination table. In 1992 the Munroe Gallery held a thirty year survey exhibition of his drawings. Silver, died at St. Vincent`s Hospital in New York City in 1992. He was fifty-four, and had been linving in Manhattan.
