LA II (Angel Ortiz)
"LA ROC Cat Woman" Decorated Graffiti Street Art Mannequin Bust Sculpture

Circa 2000

About the Item

A beautiful street art, abstract Mannequin Bust decorated by artist Angel Ortiz. Here we find this stylish bust figure with the artist signature tag along with a figure of a cat, flowers, and calligraphy. Sculpture measures 29.5 x 14.5 x 9.5 inches New York City graffiti artist L.A. II (a.k.a. Angel Ortiz) is best known for his collaborations with Keith Haring. Ortiz’s career took off after Haring spotted his “Little Angel” tag upon moving to New York and asked to meet the then-teenage artist. Throughout the ’80s, Haring and Ortiz combined their signatures to create murals, sculptures, train paintings, and other objects, and Ortiz’s style and technique are thought to have influenced Haring’s solo practice from then on. Along with several joint exhibitions of his work and Haring's, Ortiz's own mix of contemporary symbols with Asian calligraphy has been shown in galleries and museums across the United States. LA II is mostly noted for his emotionally adept work closely related to that of Keith Haring. He is known for his graffiti art style which exhibits calligraphy tied into almost every work of art he has created. Designing a pattern which is so entrancing is what creates such a frenzy of energy in his art style, and makes his work so attractive and demandable. The same attraction led to his discovery when Keith Haring immediately fell in love with his art tags in Lower Manhattan. This is what created the dynamic duo which bolted them to massive sales in New York and Europe until Keith's death in 1990. This piece is a classic representation of his graffiti and calligraphic art style. He sometimes uses subjects such as giant flowers, fish, character cats, money bags, and faces in the design of his work. This piece fuses the iconic flower with his street art design creating a truly original street art look put on canvas. We can note the details of his calligraphy design is quite intricate and is more prominent in this work than others. He has signed his name in each section of the flower petals and uses the colors purple and orange to create a classic pop art feel. PROVENANCE: LA II (Angel Ortiz) Studio; Private Collection New York City; Lilac Gallery Collection.

Victor Spinelli was born in New York from and Italian family. Established in Ibiza, he attributes his origins in art to piloting a Hot Air balloon and travelling the world as a photographer. His works range from painting to sculpture and of course, photography. In 2019 he orchestrated the construction of an 8-foot wooden sculpture of my popular photograph “Diver UP” for Burning Man. The sculpture was torched on “The Mans” ashes after he burned to the ground and this symbolized metamorphoses of not only the evolution of Diver UP, but also a demarcation point in his career, thus beginning a new chapter within it. In 2020 he organizes the first edition of the Spin Art...
