R. Clark Ellis
Ghost Dance - minimalist, abstracted figures, steel outdoor sculpture

2022

About the Item

This abstract outdoor sculpture is figurative and minimalist in form. In this engaging abstract sculpture by Robert Clarke-Ellis, two figures appear to dance together. White painted, half-moon shapes top blue and red stick-like pieces intersect as if embracing one another. The Toronto artist creates expressive pieces in minimalist form forged out of steel with clean bold lines; often in vivid colours. “The "humanness” of the figures speaks to the viewer to elicit a memory." Clarke-Ellis Robert Clarke Ellis holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. He began his career as a Sculpture Technician/ Instructor at NSCAD before completing a B.Ed. from Queen’s University. Ellis had a successful career as a high school Art and Welding teacher. He has been able to sculpt full-time in his own studio for several years. Ellis’ work integrates abstract figures that reference common events and/or conversations designed to become a starting point for the viewer’s reflection. His work has been exhibited and held in private collections in Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Michigan.
