Raphaël Nannini (Italian, 1852-1925) Napoleon Bust, Late 19th Century Bronze on marble base Signed on back 17 x 11 x 8 inches Raphael Nannini was born in Florence. He exhibited at the Paris salons and executed bronze and ivory works for the French firm Les Neveux de J Lehmann. Sculptures of Napoleon were popular in the 19th century, particularly in France, and were created to celebrate his military and political achievements. These sculptures, often busts or statues, played a role in constructing and maintaining the image of Napoleon as a hero and leader. They were commissioned by Napoleon himself and by others who admired him, reflecting a widespread desire to immortalize his legacy.
