Catching the eye of an onlooker, the youthful goddess crouches at her bath. This bronze version is based on the Greek Hellenistic original sculpture from 200 BC. The Royal Collection Trust owns a 2nd-century AD Roman version, which resides at the British Museum. Her iconic pose and loosely gathered hair have served as inspiration to artists in the Renaissance, such as Giambologna and Marcantonio Raimondi.
This finely cast sculpture represents Venus in a crouching pose, a classical subject derived from antiquity and long celebrated through Renaissance and Neoclassical reinterpretations. Depicted nude and seated low to the ground, Venus turns her head gently over her shoulder, her expression introspective and modest, as if caught in a private moment. One arm folds protectively across her torso while the other rests lightly near her knee, reinforcing the sense of graceful restraint.
The figure’s modeling emphasizes soft, idealized anatomy, with smoothly articulated limbs and subtle transitions across the surface that capture light beautifully. Her hair is arranged in a classical style, gathered and bound, further anchoring the work in the classical tradition. The dark patinated bronze surface enhances the sculpture’s sensuous contours and lends depth and warmth to the form.
The figure is mounted on a shaped marble plinth, providing a refined architectural base that contrasts with the organic curves of the body. Overall, the sculpture embodies the timeless appeal of Venus as a symbol of beauty, femininity, and restrained sensuality, reflecting the enduring influence of classical prototypes on later European sculpture.
