Large Figure of Seated Hermes, Grand Tour Bronze, Early 19th Century 19th Century Continental School After the Antique The large size figure well cast, with brownish green patination, on a conforming marble base 23 x 16 x 8.5 inches, overall 19 x 16 x 7.5 inches, bronze inscribed "mercurio" to base Seated Hermes is a Roman Imperial statue, discovered in the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, a town buried by the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. The original bronze is in the collection of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. Hermes is an Olympian deity in ancient Greek religion and mythology considered the herald of the gods. He is also widely considered the protector of human heralds, travelers, thieves, merchants, and orators. He is able to move quickly and freely between the worlds of the mortal and the divine aided by his winged sandals. Hermes plays the role of the psychopomp or "soul guide"—a conductor of souls into the afterlife.
