About the Item

The gospel of St. Luke tells how Mary and Joseph took Jesus with them on their annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem. After seven days of celebration, Jesus’ parents returned home, but weren’t aware that their son wasn’t present in the caravan. When they noticed his absence, they returned to Jerusalem. Finally, they discovered him at the temple. There, he was discussing with the scholars of the Holy Scripture. Mary expressed her anxiety to Jesus, who answered: “I must be in the House of my Father”. He made clear to her that he had to be engaged in teaching God’s ways. The moment when Mary addresses her son is not often depicted in art, certainly not in sculpture. On the other hand, you will find many representations of Christ among the Doctors. But that scene was also preserved for painting. The wooden polychrome statue is rudimentary, but nevertheless shows a close bond between the Blessed Virgin and Jesus. The sculpture is worked out on all sides. The Virgin has a small hole in the back of the head. Was it originally used to attach a metal nimbus or crown?
