Rare Panel in Scagliola manufactured by Carpigiana mid-17th century

about 1650

About the Item

Carpi, mid-17th century, scagliola panel. The panel, in black and white two-tone, features insertions of polychrome marbled elements and a central scene depicting St. Michael defeating the devil. The decorative motif is inspired by the famous painting by Bolognese painter Guido Reni featuring the Archangel Michael, leader of the heavenly armies and the one who weighs the souls subjected to judgment. The Archangel tramples the devil, depicted with human features mingling with faunal features, snake tail and clawed hands. The wings still seen on the devil's body may be a vestige of his angelic past: the eternal struggle between Good and Evil. . It should be remembered that, while for the decorative parts that appeared on the frontals and edges of table tops, it was very common for workers to intervene in individual workshops, for the figurative parts, as in the case of these devotional squares, it was the masters who directly contributed to the realization" (from "Antique Furniture in Emilia Romagna" by Graziano Manni). Good state of preservation, original wrought iron hook, presence of signs of time compatible with the era.
