The ceramic sculptures of SunKoo Yuh are composed of tight groupings of various forms including plants, animals, fish, and human figures. While Korean art, Buddhism, and Confucian beliefs inform some aspects of his imagery, implied narratives that often suggest socio-political critiques largely drive his work. Yuh is currently Associate Professor at the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. The Rubin Center has exhibited two monumental columns that showcase Yuh’s mastery of his complex narratives and the ceramic medium. Yuh’s work is included in the collections of the Renwick Gallery at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Museum of Fine Arts Houston, among others. Honors and awards he has received include the Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, the Grand Prize at the 2nd World Ceramic Biennale International Competition, Icheon, Korea, The Elizabeth R. This is an original, unique ceramic sculpture by Sarah Louise Davey on a black wooden base. The piece measures 44” x 19” x 21”. Please note: This piece is pictured with the base on top of a black pedestal and a white pedestal. The black base of the sculpture is included, but the pedestals are not included. Artist Statement: "The art of making, for me, is very much a response to the human condition of needing to connect to one another, as well as to what lies just beyond the borders of our realities. I am drawn to the idea that art can have the ability to affect those who look upon it, allowing these portraits to be conduits to a realm within our subconscious. Although my females are hard ceramic sculptures, their hollow, eggshell-like interiors feel like a glove or a mask that can easily be slipped on and off, like the psychic armor of a distant self. An introspective dialogue is started as I make each piece, invoking a surreal understanding of the physical and emotional auras of these strange beauties. Heavy in symbolism, they illustrate the psychological scope of a hybrid creature. Their wide-eyed gazes are meant to portray an emotional duality that is constantly evolving.
