Marshall Hyde
Macaque in Mask, Space Monkey series

2014

About

Macaque in Mask, from the Space Monkey series, by Marshall Hyde, commemorates an unidentified primate from the space program. The creature's face looks unnatural, almost grotesque, outfitted with a mask that covers its entire muzzle. It is one of a kind, formed by hand, using hot, flameworked glass. The white glass has some color variation. The surface has been etched giving it the look of marble. The glass head is displayed against a black circular wood plaque that hangs on the wall. It has fine white droplets that look like stars behind a layer of plate glass. Marshall Hyde used space monkey imagery to create a body of work that investigated science, heroism, celebrity, martyrdom, and humankind's' relationship with the animal kingdom. It was featured in a 2014 solo exhibition at Exhibit A. This piece measures 6.75 x 6.75 x 3.5 inches and is signed by the artist on the back of the wood.
