About

Five groups of luggage are sculpted from stone sourced from 11 countries in this delightful installation by Vancouver-based artist Paul Slipper. One of Paul’s mentors and teachers left him with a cache of rocks and stones from his various journeys, and this piece is a tribute to that man and the travels he went on. Twenty stones, ranging in size from small hand-held gemstones to a 600 lb. marble luggage duffle bag, create an assemblage of pieces that are at once sturdy and whimsical. Grouped in five separate luggage groupings from purses to large duffle bags, Travelling Sculpture Show III showcases each of the stone piece’s journey from their country of origin. Whether it is a small blue azurite stone from Morocco nestled on a marble case from BC or a stack of books—one carved from granite from Saudi Arabia, the other from blue pearl Norwegian granite, the assembled pieces tell a story of adventure and voyage. Other stones used in the work come from Spain, Australia, China, Belgium, the US, Turkey and Mexico. The luggage pieces, detailed with brass handles and zippers made of stainless steel and bronze, are durable and monumental, but also suggest that one is always ready for a next trip abroad. The sculpture is equally at home inside or outside. Paul Slipper’s work stands up to time, and will stand up to much public wear and tear. As public art, it is forged from stone and is designed to be interacted with. His work is in many public collections, and its appeal has proven to be enduring. This artful collection of luggage suggests that the voyage is as much of the process as arriving at your destination. Slipper has created a monument to the liminal moments of travel—with tags and zippers and books casually strewn around—yet all telling a story of each part from a geological and geographical perspective. By melding together basic and precious stones from far and wide, the artist forges objects as resilient as they are fleeting. Shipping within Canada and continental USA is complimentary, and the work is shipped to the USA tax and duty exempt. For more details on the individual stone origins, please inquire and we will send you a list. 1. 19 x 34.5 x 20 inches 750 lbs (grouping with black rectangular case, upright white) 2. 42 x 22 x 24.5 inches, 500 lbs (grouping with books) 3. 24 x 23 x 26 inches, 400 lbs (grouping with aircraft cable handles) 4. 18 x 37 x 21 inches, 850 lbs (two piece grouping with purse) 5. 21 x 24 x 22 inches 350 lbs (two piece, one with wide band handle)
