Sylvia Vander Sluis
"Strong and Beautiful", fabric, torso, handwoven, turquoise, sculpture

2018

About the Item

"Strong and Beautiful" by Sylvia Vander Sluis is a 19 x 14 x 6 inch fiber sculpture of handwoven, dusky-turquoise fabric with an iridescent sheen. Part of the "Torso" series, this piece is formed over a wire-mesh armature; hangs with monofilament from two, sewn-in rings at the top; and has a label inside with the artist's signature. Viewable from both sides; front and back are virtually the same. In her "Torso" series, Vander Sluis uses improvisational weaving and knitting to create fiber figures. The torso form symbolizes the artist's energetic center. With these sculptures, the artist talks about the nature of personal power and resilience. Sylvia Vander Sluis is a Boston-based, mixed–media artist. She synthesizes many different materials and techniques in collages of rich color and texture. Her work has been shown throughout the Northeast. Vander Sluis is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
