Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD)
Association of International Photography Art Dealers (AIPAD)
Since 1979, the Association of International Photography Art Dealers has set the standards for galleries specializing in fine-art photography. With members in North America, Europe, Asia and Australia, AIPAD handles such pressing issues as composing a code of ethics for dealers, increasing the public’s understanding of photography and safeguarding the rights of photographers and buyers. The annual AIPAD Photography Show at Pier 94 in New York is the premier event for curators and collectors seeking out photographic works ranging from rare 19th-century prints to contemporary digital creations.

A Train (from the series A Story of the New York Subway)
By Kazuo Sumida
Located in New York, NY
11 x 14 inch gelatin silver print. Edition 15. Signed on verso. Kazuo Sumida first visited New York in 1995. He found the city to be one of “both bustle and silence,” particularly the underground world of the subway, where he encountered “a place full of characters.” By 2002, he had produced a large body of work of images taken in this subterranean metropolis – tender scenes of lovers and children; gritty portraits of beggars for whom the subway is home; artists, musicians, commuters, and others who pass through the tunnels on their daily journeys. The resulting monograph, A Story of the New York Subway, was published in 2002. Sumida was born in 1952 in Kochi Prefecture in southern Japan. Although photography was not his formal career, Sumida has pursued the art throughout his life. He graduated from Osaka Photography Graduate School in 1983, and also studied at the International Center of Photography in New York, on a fellowship from the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs. He lives in Japan, and continues to visit New York frequently. His work has been shown at the Tokyo Ginza Kodak Photo...

Iglesia San Isidro de Barbacoas, Costa Rica
By Mario Algaze
Located in Dallas, TX
Signed, titled and dated by Mario Algaze Paper size: 16 x 20 in., Image size: 8 3/4 x 18 3/4 in. Mario Algaze was a contemporary Cuban-American photographer whose work celebrated the culture of Latin America. In 1960, at the age of thirteen, Algaze was exiled from Cuba with his family. He relocated to America and settled in Miami, Florida. Miami offered a rich cultural mecca that encouraged Algaze to travel throughout Central and South America. These trips allowed him a glimpse of belonging within a familiar culture. In finding his identity after exile, he began photographing Latin America in the 1970’s while reconnecting with the feeling of home. His photographs embody the everyday of Latin life. Between his travels in the late 70’s, Algaze studied visual art at Miami Dade College. Algaze’s masterful command of light illuminates his street scenes that detail the struggles and victories of Latin culture. Mario Algaze was the recipient of various acclaimed awards, including the Florida Artist Fellowship from the Florida Arts Council (1985), the Cintas Foundation Fellowship in Photography (1991), the Visual Arts Fellowship and the SAF Artist Fellowship sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1992, he received the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Photography. A retrospective collection of his work was showcased in the important monograph, Mario Algaze: Portfolio, published by Di Puglia Publisher, 2010. Additional monographs by the artist include, Mario Algaze Portafolio Latinamericano, Mario Algaze: Cuba 1999-2000, and Mario Algaze A Respect for Light: The Latin American...

Amber Waves of Grain, Montana
By Jeanine Michna-Bales
Located in Dallas, TX
Ed of 3 Archival pigment print Image size: 44 x 66 in. Signed, titled, dated, and numbered. Series: Standing Together: Photographs of Inez Milholland’s Final Campaign For Woman’s Suffrage Frame NOT included. In 1916, Inez Milholland Boissevain (1886–1916) embarked on a grueling campaign across the Western US on behalf of the National Women’s Party appealing for women’s suffrage ahead of the 1916 presidential election. Standing Together, by artist Jeanine Michna-Bales (born 1971), retraces Milholland’s journey. The 30-year-old suffragist delivered some 50 speeches to standing-room-only crowds in eight states in 21 days: Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Montana, Utah, Nevada and California. She battled chronic illness and lack of sleep during her travels and died a month after her last speech in Los Angeles, where her final public words were, “Mr. President, how long must women wait for liberty?” Through her photographs, combining dramatic landscapes and historical reenactments of important vignettes of Milholland on her journey with archival materials, Michna-Bales captures a glimpse of the monumental effort required to pass the 19th Amendment...
