"Sun, Moon and Stars". Three beauties enjoy a full moon on the veranda of a teahouse or restuarant. The woman on the left kneels and adjusts her lavishly printed kimono. The beauty in the center has her hair down, and behind her is a screen against which shadows are beautifully silhouetted, which adds an air of mystery. The seated woman on the right is perhaps a geisha, as we see a shamisen lying next to her. Before her is a tray with an assortment of foods. La mission héliographique : Au mois de mai 1851, Gustave Le Gray est délégué par la commission des Monuments historiques pour photographier une liste de monuments remarquables du sud-ouest de la France. D’autres figures pionnières de la photographie participent à cette vaste campagne de recensement, et doivent couvrir le reste du pays : Hippolyte Bayard, Henri Le Secq, Édouard Baldus et Auguste Mestral. Le Gray décide de fusionner son itinéraire avec celui de son élève et ami, Auguste Mestral. Entre juillet et octobre 1851, équipé d’une voiture et de deux chambres noires, le tandem sillonne le territoire de la Loire aux Pyrénées, du château de Chambord à la cité de Carcassonne. Les deux hommes, qui se connaissent depuis 1848, réalisent ensemble les prises de vue - et se présenteront d’ailleurs en tant que coauteurs devant la commission. Un champ d’expérimentation Pour Gustave Le Gray, qui vient de mettre au point le « négatif papier ciré sec », la mission héliographique est un champ d’expérimentation inespéré. Pendant trois mois, les photographes exécutent jusqu’à trente prises de vue par jour, une véritable prouesse rendue possible par l’invention de Le Gray. En effet, celle-ci dispense de maintenir humides les négatifs papier, facilitant considérablement le travail en extérieur. Les feuilles peuvent être préparées jusqu’à quinze jours à l’avance, et développées plusieurs heures après la prise de vue. « Tout le monde comprendra combien ce nouveau procédé facilite les opérations en voyage », écrit Le Gray. Méthodiques, les deux hommes numérotent les négatifs dans l’ordre chronologique. Cette numérotation, allant jusqu’à 605, témoigne d’une production soutenue et indépendante, débordant largement le cadre imposé par la commission des monuments historiques. Progressivement, le recensement scientifique s’accompagne de véritables digressions artistiques. Entre leur séjour à Carcassonne – point culminant du voyage – et leur retour à Paris, les « photographistes » s’autorisent de nombreux clichés personnels : des vues d’Amélie les Bain, du Pont Palaldas et du pont du Gard. Dans les Pyrénées-Orientales, les cloîtres gothiques d’Elne et d’Arles-sur-tech servent d’écrin à deux autoportraits de Gustave Le Gray. Le premier, réalisé à Elne, est aujourd’hui en mains privées (nous n’en avons trouvé aucune reproduction dans la littérature). Le second, pris très peu de temps après, n’est connu pour l’heure que par deux épreuves, dont celle que nous présentons. Un manifeste artistique Vêtu d’un costume noir de ville, Le Gray pose sous une arche gothique, jambes croisées et cigarette à la main. La blancheur insolente des guêtres, du chapeau et du col, accroche irrésistiblement l’œil du spectateur, et rehausse l’austère architecture médiévale d’une touche de modernité et de dandysme. L’élégance et la familiarité subtile de la mise en scène rappellent, dans leur esprit, d’autres portraits de Le Gray, habitué de compositions libres et volontiers énigmatiques – nous pensons ici à son fantomatique Autoportrait dans le miroir de la table de toilette de la duchesse de Parme, réalisé la même année, où le photographe parvient à capter son ombre fuyante dans un miroir. Contrairement à ses pairs, Le Gray s’est peu consacré au portrait, lui préférant le paysage. Il en a cependant maîtrisé tous les codes, et signé d’authentiques chefs-d’œuvre en la matière : citons ici le portrait rêveur et mélancolique du dramaturge Edmond Cottinet (1849), et celui du sculpteur Auguste Clésinger (1855), d’une vigueur éblouissante, qui fut longtemps donné à son élève Félix Nadar...

You want to know the author of this remarkable play that has just obtained such a great, and I must say, justified success.... that author... is MEEEEE....! LES BAS-BLEUS (The bluestockings) is a series of 40 numbered lithographs, which appeared in the Charivari between January 30, 1844 and August 7, 1844. ALBUM LES BAS-BLEUS. The series (“Les Bas-Bleus”) proved to be of such a success with the public, that apart from the Charivari edition a separate edition was published on single white sheets and sold at an up-market price to collectors. Apart from that, an album LES BAS-BLEUS was published in the same year (1844). ABOUT THIS PRINT. The Odéon theatre in Paris opened in 1797 and merged in 1946 with the Comédie Française. It reopened again in 1959 as an independent theatre under the name Théatre de France. This print shows an enthusiastic public applauding the author at the opening night. It seems that the female author had hidden behind a male name. The applause stops when the audience fully realizes the deception. This print can be seen in reference to George Sand's play "Cosima", which also had been rejected by the public under similar circumstances. BLUESTOCKINGS. The expression "Bluestocking” (or suffragette) dates back to 18th century England. At that time, angry young gentlemen of society met in London at the Montague House to discuss literary and political questions of their time. As a sign of protest against the establishment they wore blue wool-socks instead of black silk stockings. The expression was taken over by 19th century France to ridicule the new movement carried by Jeanne Désirée (1832), Cécile Fourmel, Suzanne Vailquin, and Claire Demar. He traveled to Paris in 1866 and became a favorite student of Gérôme which lead to Bridgman's exhibition in the Paris Salon in 1868. He made France his permanent home in 1870, and spent his summers on sketching tours of Brittany. He exhibited with the National Academy of Design in 1871. He lived in Egypt in 1873; scenes from Egyptian antiquity were prominent in his work. Bridgman's talents extended to writing and music; he was a noted composer and musician. The artist died in Rouen, France, in 1928." Courtesy SAAM (Smithsonian American Art Museum) "Frederick Arthur Bridgman was a well-known landscape and historical painter. He is most admired for his Orientalist subjects, including views of North Africa, in particular Egypt and Algeria, and his scenes from Ancient Egyptian history. Although born in Alabama, Bridgman came from a Yankee family. After the death of his doctor father and amid the mounting tension before the Civil War, the Bridgmans returned to their native New England, settling in New York. Young Frederick showed artistic gifts and was apprenticed as an engraver to the American Banknote Company. He attended evening classes at the Brooklyn Art Association at the same time. He also studied at the National Academy of Design, where he met Harry Humphrey Moore and Thomas Hovendon. In these early years, Bridgman exhibited at the Brooklyn Art Association. Bridgman travelled to France, where he visited Pont Aven, the artists’ colony in Brittany frequented by Paul Gauguin and Emile Bernard as well as a circle of American painters around the Philadelphian Robert Wylie (1839-1877). Bridgman also studied in Paris with Jean Léon Gérôme at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. Bridgman made an important reputation for himself in France at the annual Paris Salons; in Britain, where he exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1871 and 1904, and in Germany, where he showed at the Grosse Berliner Kunst Ausstellung. His work was included in the American displays at the 1889 Universal Exposition held in Paris. In 1872 Bridgman travelled to Spain and North Africa in the company of a British artist known only as ‘S’. In the winter of 1873-4 he made a second trip, visiting Egypt in the company of fellow American artist Charles Sprague Pearce. Bridgman married a young Bostonian, Florence Mott Baker; the deterioration of his wife’s health from the terrible inherited neurological disorder Huntington’s Chorea led him to return to Algiers in 1885 for a respite for them both in a warm climate. He wrote a fascinating travel narrative describing his journeys in North Africa, Winters in Algiers, published in 1888 and illustrated with woodcuts from his works. The Moulin Rouge is the famous cabaret located in the old wind mill building in the right distance of this image. It was the center of fin de siecle culture in Paris. Condition: Slight yellowing to the sheet from age. Sight size: 9 x 5 3/4 inches Frame size: 14-1/8 x 10-3/4 x 1/2" Provenance: Eric G. Carlson (1940-2016), art historian and noted art dealer François Clément Sommier, best known under the pseudonym “Henry Somm,” was born in Rouen in 1844. He attended the local École municipale des beaux-arts and went on in 1867 to Paris, where he studied under Isidore Pils (1813-1875). “Somm is above all a painter and his watercolors are much sought after; he has the painter’s eye to the highest degree imaginable.” Louis Morin, Somm’s fellow artist revealed in 1893 that while his training as an academic painter forged his draughsmanship and an acute eye for colors, Somm preferred and excelled in the graphic realm. Particularly prolific, he produced a very extensive corpus of 7,500 drawings and prints, many of which were widely reproduced in journals and magazines. In 1867, Somm’s career reached a turning point with the discovery of Japanese culture through his friendship with French collector and critic Philippe Burty and a visit to the Paris International Exhibition. More generally, Japanese art and especially Japanese woodblock prints exerted a heavy influence on French artists at the time, and especially on the Impressionists, who were particularly inspired by the subject matter, as well as the innovative use of perspective, composition and color. Although technically not an Impressionist by pure definition, Somm’s interest in the effect of atmospheric light on shadow and color prompted Edgar Degas to invite him to participate in their 4th exhibition in 1879. However, Somm did not exhibit again with the Impressionists, and was never considered a member of the group. Rather, his work intersects between Impressionism, Symbolism and Japonism. In fact, while his drypoints and etchings reflect a more literal borrowing of Japanese elements than the work of Whistler or Monet, they also clearly anticipate the future work of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. Although Somm was 20 years older than Toulouse-Lautrec, both artists developed a friendship, as habitués of the Chat noir, a cabaret founded by Rodolphe Salis and located 84 boulevard de Rochechouart in Montmartre. More than a cabaret, the Chat noir also became an important gathering place for writers, poets, composers, musicians, and artists living in Montmartre. For Somm, a founding member of this artistic circle, it also served as a unique environment, where he could express his limitless imagination as active participant to the events – notably the literary soirées organized by the hydropathic group – and illustrator of the Chat noir journal. In 1886, Somm, in collaboration with Georges Auriol, initiated the Chat noir’s first puppet show, which subsequently evolved into shadow theater. Somm’s Japonism and sense of humor appealed to Toulouse-Lautrec, and this influence is echoed in Lautrec posters advertising two other Montmartre nightspots, namely Le Mirliton and Le Divan Japonais...

A very rich impression with plate tone and drypoint burr, printed on simili-japon. Provenance: Frederick Keppel & Co. This is one of the artist's most striking images. Signed in pencil. Housed in 25 x 20-inch archival mat, suitable for framing. Paul Albert Besnard, was an impressionist painter. In 1866, the seventeen-year-old son of artist parents began his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts Paris. In 1874, Besnard won the important Prix de Rome, with which the academy distinguished young talent. A portion of the scholarship is a stay of several years in Rome. Besnard married Charlotte Dubray, a sculptress, during this time in Rome. The couple lived in England, where Besnard exhibited at the Royal Academy London, between 1881 and 1884. Trompe l'oeil. [Punch and Judy]. Watercolor and drawing, undated, circa 1830. Paper size 10.25 x 14" (26.1 x 35.6 cm). On "J. Whatman" watermarked paper. Unidentified artist. A 19th-century visual montage of Cruikshank's "Punch & Judy." The images are taken from the book "The Tragical Comedy, or Comical Tragedy of Punch and Judy." As told to John Payne Collier by Giovanni in 1827, illustrated by George Cruikshank and published by S. Prowlett, London 1828. The central circle illustrates a drawing showing two allegorical female figures with two putti. The text under this image: “E Musao Hugonis Howard Armig, from Guercino.” On top of that illustration is a handsome painting of a flintlock pistol. Trompe l’oeil is an art of illustration – the name translates to ‘Trick of the Eye.” The puppet show of Pulcinella or Punch and Judy has a long and fascinating history. “A puppet play that would have featured a version of Punch was first recorded in England in May 1662 by the diarist Samuel Pepys. He noted seeing it in Covent Garden, London, performed by the Italian puppet showman Pietro Gimonde from Bologna, otherwise known as Signor Bologna. The earliest script of a Punch and Judy show...
