Photo courtesy of Bromley Caldari<\/p><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three decades after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/studio-54\/\">Studio 54<\/a> opened in 1977, cofounder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/ian-schrager\/\">Ian Schrager<\/a> told <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/nymag.com\/news\/features\/31278\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that he regretted inventing the \u201cvelvet rope\u201d barricade with his partner, Steve Rubell. \u201cI\u2019m surprised, quite frankly, that in 30 years no one\u2019s come up with something better,\u201d Schrager said. So we talked with Studio 54 architect Scott Bromley about the good, the bad and the groovy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/period\/1970s\/\">1970s design<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studio 54 opened its doors on \u201cApril 26th, 1977, honey,\u201d says Bromley, like it was yesterday. The club sparked immediate buzz. Photo courtesy of Bromley Caldari<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These days, Bromley interacts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/halston\/fashion\/\">with a lot of young designers<\/a> and architects through his firm, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bromleycaldari.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bromley Caldari<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cThe kids are so crazy about the \u201970s,\u201d he says. That\u2019s a dangerous design,\u201d he declares. The end of the decade was joyous,\u201d Bromley says. He adds that the \u201970s had the most danceable music: \u201cIt made you feel like you were flying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To experience this atmosphere of sex, drugs and rock &#8216;n&#8217; roll didn\u2019t require a fortune. \u201cIt was really a lifestyle that didn\u2019t matter if you\u2019re rich or poor,\u201d Bromley explains. It has really flourished since the late \u201970s,\u201d Bromley notes. As social freedoms expanded, the functions of the household were no longer cordoned off as if behind a velvet rope. Photo by Thomas Loof<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Bromley splits his time between Manhattan and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/fire-island-modernist\/\">Fire Island, an LGBTQ enclave<\/a> with its own architectural identity. Fire Island was a retreat for many in the Studio 54 scene, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/halston-inventing-american-fashion-rizzoli-book\/\">including Halston<\/a>. Photo courtesy of Bromley Caldari<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nowadays, Studio 54 is frozen in the popular imagination at its apex of fun, even though the quality of the parties declined after Rubell and Schrager&#8217;s 1980 sentencing for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tax evasion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The club shut down six years later. Nobody had to watch Studio 54 slowly fade into obscurity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The world grew up, but Studio 54 never
