See snippets of their discussions in the video below, and read on for 1stdibs contributor Wendy Moonan&#8217;s recap of the panels. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"TEFAF Art Symposium on Design\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HnhCzx-Dsh8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">Last Friday morning, hundreds of collectors assembled to talk about a topic near-and-dear to 1stdibs aficionados: the booming vintage design market. After an introduction by Marie Kalt, the chic Editor-in-Chief of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.admagazine.fr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Architectural Digest France<\/a>, journalist Ian Phillips kicked off the conversations with a telling example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 1991 a \u2018Standard\u2019 chair that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/jean-prouve\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jean Prouv\u00e9<\/a> <span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">designed in 1934 cost 45 euros,\u201d Phillips said. \u201cLast fall, Paris\u2019s Artcurial auction house sold a set of six for more than 13,000 euros apiece \u2014 an increase in value of 29,000 percent. The market for design is more stable than the market for art.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Phillips tracked the rise in prices of key pieces designed by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/le-corbusier\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Le Corbusier<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/pierre-jeanneret\/furniture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pierre Jeanneret<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/jean-royere\/furniture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jean<em><\/em> Roy\u00e8re<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/charlotte-perriand\/furniture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charlotte Perriand<\/a> and others. Cedric Morisset, head of 20<sup>th<\/sup>-century design at PIASA auction house in Paris, echoed Phillips&#8217;s sentiments. \u201cThere are more collectors of vintage design today, and they are willing to spend more on it,\u201d Morisset said. \u201cThe rarest and more exceptional pieces are getting the best results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Three of the brightest stars of the Paris interior design world spoke about the versatility of classic design pieces vis-\u00e0-vis their own global clienteles. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective\/style_compass\/joseph_dirand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Joseph Dirand<\/a> focused his comments on Le Corbusier, referencing a spate of recent high-profile hotel (Habita Monterey, Mexico), retail (Alexander Wang, Beijing) and restaurant (Monsieur Bleu, Paris) commissions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a huge design revolution in the 1950s; architects were creating a new world,\u201d Dirand said, pointing to the plain wooden stool Le Corbusier designed for his summer house in 1952. \u201cFor me, Corbu\u2019s cube is the perfect example of absence of design with all the functions: stool and table. It\u2019s the minimal expression of what a piece of furniture can be.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective\/style_compass\/pierre_yovanovitch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pierre Yovanovitch<\/a> showed a 17th-century chateau he created with vintage works by iconic Scandinavian modernists like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/paavo-tynell\/furniture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paavo Tynell<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/axel-einar-hjorth\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Axel Einar Hjorth<\/a>, Gunnar Asplund and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/frits-henningsen\/furniture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frits Henningsen<\/a>. Asked why such pieces work so well in unexpected contexts, Yovanovitch replied: \u201cArchitectural lines were more pure then, and there was never too much design.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chahan Minassian name-checked 1970s American designers \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/edward-wormley\/furniture\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Edward Wormley<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/paul-evans\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Paul Evans<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/philip-kelvin-laverne\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Philip and Kelvin Laverne<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/search\/?q=vladimir+kagan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vladimir Kagan<\/a> \u2014 as current favorites of his international clientele. \u201cThese pieces are soft and elegant, inviting, and mix well in pure contemporary spaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The audience \u2014 as thoroughly addicted to vintage as the symposium&#8217;s title would suggest \u2014 eagerly nodded along to the designers&#8217;s pronouncements.
