Some people think of the Milan-based collective as the design equivalent to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/patrick-nagel\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrick Nagel\u2019s kitschy screenprints<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but for others Memphis represents what made the early 1980s so great: freedom of expression, dizzying patterns and off-the-wall colors.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs someone who was born in the 1980s, Memphis at times feels like the grown-up, artsy version of the toys I used to play with,\u201d says Shaun Kasperbauer, cofounder of the Brooklyn studio <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/souda\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Souda<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It feels a little nostalgic, but at the same time it seems like an aesthetic that\u2019s perfectly suited to an internet age \u2014 loud, colorful and utilizing forms that are graphic and often a little unexpected.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New technologies have certainly helped reboot Memphis, as is evidenced by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/kartell\/\">Kartell<\/a> and<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its recent collection \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kartell Goes Sottsass. A Tribute to Memphis.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The legendary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ettore-sottsass\/\">Ettore Sottsass<\/a> had initially presented his drawings of taboret stools, vases and lamps to the Italian design company back in 2004, but it took 11 years \u2014 and advances in plastic materials and injection techniques \u2014 before the company could produce the concepts commercially.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To mark the launch, Kartell tapped Memphis Group members <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/george-sowden\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">George Sowden<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and French-born Nathalie du Pasquier to upholster various chairs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in eye-popping fabrics. Offered by Ammann Gallery<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/amman-gallery\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gallery owner Gabrielle Ammann<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> notes, Sotheby\u2019s recent auction of David Bowie\u2019s Memphis collection also brought the movement back into the spotlight, and rightly so. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think that a review of the revolutionary 1980s Memphis period is long overdue,\u201d says Ammann, who showed a Tetris-like 1973 tapestry by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/andrea-branzi\/\">Andrea Branzi<\/a> at the Collective dEsign fair earlier this month. \u201cLooking into who collected those pieces,\u201d she adds, \u201cwe find visionaries like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/karl-lagerfeld\/\">Karl Lagerfeld<\/a> and Bowie.\u201d Clearly, they were onto something. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Memphis story begins in 1980, when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sotts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ss<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then a beacon of Italian postmodernism, tapped younger designers to develop a collection for the Milan Furniture Fair the next year. The mission: Boldly reject the stark minimalism of the 1970s and shatter the rules of form and function. So as a record of Bob Dylan\u2019s \u201cStuck Inside of Mobile\u201d played on repeat, they took their name from the song, devised their marketing strategy and plotted the postmodern look that would come to define the decade of excess \u2014 primary colors, blown-up proportions, playful nods to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/art-deco\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Art Deco<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/style\/pop-art\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pop<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An image of Sottsass posing with his collaborators in a conversation pit shaped like a boxing ring appeared in magazines all over the world, and Lagerfield furnished his Monte Carlo penthouse entirely in Memphis furniture. Meanwhile, members like Andrea Branzi, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/aldo-cibic\/furniture\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aldo Cibic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Michele de Lucchi, du Pasquier, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/shiro-kuramata\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shiro Kuramata<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/paola-navone\/\">Paola Navone<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/peter-shire\/\">Peter Shire<\/a>, Sowden, Sottsass and his wife, journalist Barbara Radice, went on to enjoy fruitful careers.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_223063\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-223063\" class=\"wp-image-223063 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Pattern-Chess-Stool-Order_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"290\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-223063\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/anna-karlin\/\">Anna Karlin<\/a>&#8216;s recent Pattern Chess Piece stools are the descendants of Memphis style.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eventually, the Reagan era gave way to cool 1990s minimalism, and Memphis fell out of fashion. Sottsass left the group in 1985, and by 1987, it had disbanded.
