It is joined not only by the Arc de Triomphe and I.M. Pei\u2019s shimmering Louvre Pyramid, but also the Leaning Tower of Pisa, Stonehenge, the Taj Mahal, the Great Wall of China and . . . is that the Colossus of Rhodes? Landmarks from five continents and some 50 nations all fit comfortably in a space <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on 44th Street because they\u2019ve been shrunk to 1:87 scale as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/gulliversgate.com\/\">Gulliver\u2019s Gate<\/a>: a world in miniature among the giant billboards and jumbo marquees of Times Square.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_222573\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222573\" class=\"wp-image-222573 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"379\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0024.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0024-536x350.jpg 536w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0024-120x78.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-222573\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A MetroCard demonstrates the scale of this Grand Central Station model.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nearly three years in the making, the $40 million attraction \u2014 named for Jonathan Swift\u2019s intrepid traveler to the land of the Lilliputians \u2014 celebrated its grand opening last month. Just inside the ground-level entrance, a welcoming pair of ringmaster types perched atop tall stilts and eyed visitors through binoculars, heralding the impending scale shift.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An escalator deposited guests at the Metropolis exhibit, where an amalgamated New York City unfolds in an illuminated streetscape awash in vehicles and tiny figures. Realizing the concept of \u201ca miniature world in the center of Times Square\u201d had its challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe typical response was, \u2018Wow, that sounds like a really good idea. You\u2019re crazy!\u2019\u201d he explains. \u201cBuilding something so intricate and detailed seemed impossible, and it\u2019s pretty close to it, but we found a way to get it done.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_222583\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222583\" class=\"wp-image-222583 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/GG_SOUTHAMERICA_FAVELAS_0H2A1955.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/GG_SOUTHAMERICA_FAVELAS_0H2A1955.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/GG_SOUTHAMERICA_FAVELAS_0H2A1955-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/GG_SOUTHAMERICA_FAVELAS_0H2A1955-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-222583\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Latin America exhibit features a hillside favela.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At 49,000 square feet, Gulliver\u2019s Gate spans a floor the size of a city block. In addition to the opening ode to New York, exhibits include those devoted to Europe, Russia (perpetually dusted in snow), Asia and the Middle East, and each was brought to life by hundreds of artists and makers from the region depicted.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The miniature Latin America, made in Buenos Aires, features a working waterfall, an Amazon River and Copacabana Beach, complete with crashing waves. Langer is partial to the diminutive Panama Canal, where one of three cargo ships traversing the locks is marked \u201cLanger Industries\u201d (a surprise tribute from one of the modelmakers).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_222593\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222593\" class=\"wp-image-222593 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/170109_EUROPE-TIMESSQUARE-pp_L1370144-copy.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/170109_EUROPE-TIMESSQUARE-pp_L1370144-copy.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/170109_EUROPE-TIMESSQUARE-pp_L1370144-copy-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/170109_EUROPE-TIMESSQUARE-pp_L1370144-copy-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-222593\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In the United Kingdom section, figures re-create the cover of the Beatles&#8217; <em>Abbey Road<\/em>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designed to be both immersive and interactive, the space is studded with large keyholes where visitors can insert the chunky key that doubles as an admission ticket to initiate specified actions, whether an \u201ceveryday parade\u201d in downtown Manhattan, \u201cZeus awakening\u201d at thundercloud-topped Mount Olympus or a Loch Ness monster sighting in Scottish waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For an added fee, guests can be shrunk to join in on the fun. The Hamburg attraction recently made headlines for erecting a Trumpian wall around its tiny United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_222613\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-222613\" class=\"wp-image-222613 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0003-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"435\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0003-2.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0003-2-467x350.jpg 467w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_0003-2-120x90.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-222613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visitor to Gulliver&#8217;s Gate can have 3-D models made of themselves, which they can take home or add to the display.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Gulliver\u2019s Gate, politics are in the eyes of the beholder. The series of Washington, D.C., monuments includes the White House (microscopic sunbathers on the terrace, snipers and Santa Claus on the roof) and the Supreme Court, where a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> vignette plays out on the stairs (a woman clutching an infant regards a runaway baby carriage). \u201cThe closer you look, the more you see,\u201d says Langer, alluding to the many \u201cEaster eggs\u201d waiting to be discovered throughout Gulliver\u2019s Gate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with that, a young boy sprints past the splendid, cherry blossom-ringed recreation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/whats-new-in-dc-museums\/\">David Adjaye\u2019s Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture<\/a>, and yells to a hovering parent, \u201cWe\u2019re going to see Yoda.
