She selected sofas by Rodolfo Dordoni<\/a>, lounge chairs by Christian Liaigre<\/a> and a marble-and-wood Zaragosa coffee table<\/a> by KGBL<\/a> in tones that echo the natural beauty just outside the floor-to-ceiling windows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clint Nicholas<\/a> made sure an 18th-century East Hampton cottage<\/a> retained its rustic<\/a> appeal even with an expansion and remodel. \u201cI love how the living room seamlessly connects indoor and outdoor spaces,\u201d he says. \u201cIt feels exceptionally cozy and homey, thanks to the client\u2019s collection of beautiful items, which we carefully layered in to enhance the warmth and charm.\u201d Nicholas added two vintage French woven-leather armchairs<\/a>, vintage leather club chairs<\/a> and a well-worn wooden bench<\/a> next to the sofa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located just a quick walk from the beach in Amagansett, a new house<\/a> designed, built and decorated by the full-service firm Formarch<\/a> embraces the sandy colors of its locale. Dual east and west exposures make the living room airy and light. Among the furnishings, the team custom made the overlapping coffee tables<\/a>, as well as the extra-long sofa<\/a> and matching chair<\/a>. They found the other seating on 1stDibs, including the high-back lounge chair by H.W. Klein<\/a> for Bramin<\/a> and the pair of 1950s Italian lounge chairs by Rito Valla<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The installation over the fireplace, by Formarch\u2019s principal design director, Brent Leonard, consists of 56 organically shaped steel objects that he calls “soul bowls.” \u201cThey represent our fluid nature and the parts of us that make up the soul,\u201d he says, noting that \u201cthe bowls travel like a flock of birds in formation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen we started the project, the dining room had beautiful bones, proportions and molding details,\u201d designer Alexandra Loew<\/a> says of this space in a traditional shingle-style farmhouse<\/a>. \u201cWe darkened the floors and plastered the walls and moldings with various soft clay hues and finishes to give it more richness and depth and to articulate the details.\u201d Loew brought in vintage pieces that she found on 1stDibs, namely, an Erik H\u00f6glund<\/a> multiarm chandelier, a T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings<\/a> saber-leg dining table and Erik Chambert<\/a> Swedish Art Deco<\/a> dining chairs. Vintage Delft candlesticks<\/a> on the table complete the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kevin Dumais, principal of Dumais ID<\/a>, found the X-Base chairs by Harvey Probber<\/a>, free-form coffee table and tubular club chairs by Pace Collection<\/a> on 1stDibs. \u201cIt\u2019s an evening retreat for lounging after dinner,\u201d says Dumais. \u201cI love that it\u2019s a bit darker and richer than the rest of the home, with walnut<\/a> finishes, a smoky gray sofa and a chandelier<\/a> that provides a romantic ambient glow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hilary Matt<\/a> finalized the bright and airy kitchen dining space of a new-construction house<\/a> in Water Mill during COVID. Supply chain issues made furnishing the room a challenge, but with a little perseverance, she was able to get her clients their original selections, including a custom travertine table<\/a> and cane-back dining chairs<\/a> by Uultis<\/a>. For lighting, she chose a polished-nickel chandelier from Visual Comfort<\/a>. \u201cI love how it adds a modern touch and the way it looks juxtaposed with the wood-and-rattan dining chairs,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaughn Miller started with a French 1940s<\/a> metal desk and a vintage Edward Wormley<\/a> for Dunbar<\/a> leather desk chair. But she and her client had the most fun hunting for the antique treasures and trophies<\/a> that line the custom shelves in front of the window. She calls their quest the \u201cthrill of the kill!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gramercy Design<\/a> crafted both the architecture and interiors of a 1,200-square foot, shingle-style new-construction house<\/a> in the dunes section of Amagansett to suit longtime clients and their labradoodle, Sherlock. \u201cThe homeowners fell in love with Farrow & Ball\u2019s Stone Blue and wanted to use the color throughout the home,\u201d says firm founder Kyle O\u2019Donnell. \u201cIt was an easy task, given that the color works well, especially in the living room, which is the home\u2019s main gathering space.\u201d A custom sofa anchors the room, while all the newness is softened by vintage 1stDibs finds, including a cotton-webbed chair<\/a> and a live-edge coffee table<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Robin Standefer and Stephen Alesch, the married partners behind architecture and design firm Roman and Williams<\/a>, only lightly renovated their own 1950s Montauk beach retreat<\/a>. \u201cOur living room is equal parts laid-back beach house and indulgent luxury \u2014 and totally and completely us,\u201d says Standefer. \u201cEverything in it is either of our own design or vintage, along with a few treasured found or gifted objects.\u201d The aptly named Montauk sofa is one of their designs. Behind it are bronze-and-steel cabinets that lend the rustic decor an industrial<\/a> edge. The side table<\/a> is made from driftwood<\/a>, while the vintage African<\/a> coffee table is carved from a single wood block. The couple found the 1950s rope-and-bentwood chair in France.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
