In the primary suite of a largely neutral-toned Toronto home<\/a>, EM Design Studio<\/a> devised the kind of serene retreat that makes the distinction between bathing and living space seem arbitrary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warm French Vanilla marble and Moroccan Tadelakt plaster enfold the bath in a tranquil palette. A bespoke Atelier F\u00e9vrier rug, a Fair Design plaster side table<\/a>, an Apparatus<\/a> incense burner and Waterworks<\/a> Henry fixtures add artisanal notes without disturbing the calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cRather than introducing contrast through color or ornament, we looked to subtle shifts in texture, finish and form to give the room depth,\u201d says Nicole Webster, the creative director and a partner at EM. The result is \u201cquiet without feeling austere, luxurious without being overt and, above all, like a place you genuinely want to linger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the primary bathroom, the home’s general air of restraint makes way for one particularly striking vignette: a round copper bathtub<\/a> positioned beneath a Paul Ferrante chandelier<\/a> and beside an 18th-century Italian giltwood mirror<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Burnished plaster walls along with reclaimed antique marble flooring<\/a> keep the composition grounded, while full-height Kravet<\/a> drapery frames the arched window and its private-courtyard vista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA bathtub should feel like more than a functional fixture,\u201d Flanigan says. \u201cI want it to have a strong presence within the architecture while also creating a moment of respite \u2014 ideally positioned to take advantage of natural light or a meaningful view.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designed by architect Harrie T. Lindeberg in the late 1920s, this Seattle house<\/a> occupies a dramatic perch overlooking Puget Sound. For its primary bathroom, Clive Lonstein<\/a> created a hexagonal space centered on a freestanding tub<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Waterworks fixtures and white Calacatta<\/a> Lincoln stone offer crisp counterpoints to the hand-polished mahogany<\/a> walls, which, in turn, lend the room a vintage cruise-ship quality that nods to both the house\u2019s Jazz Age origins and the homeowner\u2019s career in the transportation industry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI loved the idea of being inspired by the ocean liners of the 1920s and 1930s,\u201d Lonstein says. \u201cYou are transported when entering the bathroom into a gracious space that is traditionally inspired combined with modern elements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Throughout a Gstaad vacation home<\/a>, Peter Mikic<\/a> paired rugged Alpine-chalet character with modern-day edginess and glamour. In this top-floor bathroom, a gleaming brass Catchpole & Rye tub makes a star turn against a pale-stone backdrop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pitched, timber-beamed ceiling keeps all that shine from feeling too glitzy, while a compact window lets in a wash of mountain light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even the practical details \u2014 like the Art Deco<\/a>\u2013inspired THG Paris<\/a> fittings, an unlaquered-brass towel warmer and a floating stone vanity \u2014 were deliberately considered. The space embodies what Mikic calls a \u201ccozy masculine\u201d aesthetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This contemporary home on Florida\u2019s Gold Coast \u201cis a modern take on a Moroccan riad<\/a>,\u201d says designer Tom Stringer<\/a>, who found glamorous ways to express that idea in the primary bathroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThroughout the house and in the primary bath, rolling lattice panels that are modern takes on traditional mashrabiya screens<\/a> are used to divide the room and to filter the strong sunlight,\u201d Stringer explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Bain Ultra soaking tub rests atop a perimeter drain filled with polished stones, all surrounded by white coral<\/a> flooring, the combination giving the room an elemental character. Wenge cabinetry<\/a> and a lightly aged brass pendant<\/a> add warmth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Holly Hunt<\/a> bench and three-tier Dessin Fournir<\/a> side table, meanwhile, demonstrate that even a plumbed nest can display the comfortable sophistication of a high-end living room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Beautiful Monster<\/em>, a surreal photograph<\/a> by Paco Peregr\u00edn, \u201canchors the space,\u201d says Stringer. The effect is worldly without feeling too thematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Historic” barely skims the surface in describing a home in London\u2019s Bloomsbury, to which 1stDibs 50 honoree Rachel Chudley brought her special touch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Virginia Woolf danced in the kitchen of this house!\u201d says Chudley. “It is a wonderful place with a special creative heritage \u2014 and creative current inhabitants. My goal was to reflect this in the design decisions we made.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One ravishing result of these design decisions is seen here: a combination <\/em>dressing room, bath and entertaining space<\/a> sporting an Eloise Fornieles painting above the fireplace. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In designing this space in a Smith Lake, Alabama, <\/a>vacation home<\/a>, Andrew Brown took his cue from the surrounding nature. “I wanted the colors of the bathroom to complement, but not distract from, the outdoors,” he says. “The view is really the main feature in the bathroom, and the tub provides the perfect space to relax and enjoy the views.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To keep the focus on the lake-scape, Brown settled on a subtle decor, including an antique English bamboo side table<\/a> topped by a vintage glass vase<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
