He\u2019d gone to film school, but yearned to be a painter, and lacked the discipline to train himself in either field. \u201cI was a lofty, tweed-wearing, Solzhenitsyn-reading, confused young fellow,\u201d the Dublin native recalls. \u201cI had a romantic view of things . . . and painting was very romantic to me then.\u201d In 1988, when he was 20, he dropped out of school went to live abroad. He parents approved of this decision. Both were involved in the arts \u2014 his mother is, in fact, a painter \u2014 and so had sympathy for the often-awkward maturation of creative souls.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watson spent more than a year footloose, perching for several months at a time in Paris, then Munich, then Barcelona, visiting museums, meeting new people, feeling out the wider world. By 1990, ready to further expand his horizons and recommit to painting, he set off for New York, hoping to immerse himself in what was then its vibrant youthful downtown art scene. Not long after he\u2019d arrived, Watson got offered a job from an acquaintance to be the second assistant to a commercial photographer. He\u2019d been snapping pictures ever since his father gave him a 35mm Nikon when he was a teenager. For a time back then, he and a friend became preoccupied with photographing elderly ladies sitting on benches. The mystery of the women\u2019s pasts captivated them, but only for a while. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 1992, after a year and half learning the photography business as an assistant, Watson set off on his own. He spent a few months shopping portfolios around to little avail. Getting impatient, he called up <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Travel &amp; Leisure<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nd pretending he was about to fly off to Paris for an assignment, he asked if the magazine needed anything shot there. It did, and thus began his long association with the publication. It was due, in part, to Watson\u2019s newfound zeal for photography, but also the pressures of impending fatherhood \u2014 he had gotten his girlfriend pregnant and commercial photography was a more lucrative career bet than painting. (In addition to that child, a son, he and his girlfriend, who became his wife, also had a daughter, but they eventually divorced. Watson is currently married to the American photographer Christine Lebeck, with whom he has another daughter and a son. The family is based in Dublin.) <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If he took awhile to mature, when Watson did, he did it quickly. During that sojourn, when he was seemingly loafing about Europe, his eye had been evolving. Once he embarked on his photography career, he shot images of great clarity and atmosphere, often edged in shadow, which were in every way his own. And art directors loved them. \u201cEmbrace the darkness,\u201d Watson jokes, is something of a motto. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_231023\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231023\" class=\"wp-image-231023 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU309596_l.jpg\" alt=\"Staircase (Spiral), 2001, by Simon Watson\" width=\"580\" height=\"461\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU309596_l.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU309596_l-440x350.jpg 440w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU309596_l-120x95.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-231023\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/color-photography\/simon-watson-staircase-spiral\/id-a_946753\/\"><em>Staircase (Spiral)<\/em>, 2001<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, he never really looked to the photographic greats for inspiration, but instead to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/style\/old-masters\/\">Old Masters<\/a>. \u201cVan Eyck is very important to me,\u201d says Watson. \u201cI frame my photography in the same way he handles his portraits. Also important are the moody painters of the 17th and 18th centuries, like Pieter de Hooch and Jan Vermeer.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In those early years, Watson focused on building his reputation and traveled nonstop. On top of a growing list of editorial clients, he also added IBM, American Express and Mastercard to his corporate client roster. Yet successful as he became, he longed for more artistic work. A memory kept returning to him of being a boy of about ten waiting for the bus for school. \u201cI would look into the stately windows of a row of shabby, grubby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/georgian\/\">Georgian<\/a> townhouses, with cheap, nasty net curtains and light streaming through from the back windows hitting the wood floor,\u201d he recalls. \u201cI was fascinated by the lives led in those spaces.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_231033\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-231033\" class=\"wp-image-231033 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU315783_l.jpg\" alt=\"Untitled, 2009, by Simon Watson\" width=\"580\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU315783_l.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU315783_l-438x350.jpg 438w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/TRU315783_l-120x96.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-231033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/color-photography\/simon-watson-untitled\/id-a_973733\/\"><em>Untitled<\/em>, 2009<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engrossed with \u201cremembrances of things past,\u201d he set off on a series of art photography projects, taking photos of rooms where a presence lingered. Some of the most compelling are the images he shot of interiors in New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. \u201cThey\u2019re creepy,\u201d says Watson, in the way their everyday details contrast with signs of the disaster, like one of a dining table set for a meal bobbing in the flood waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But perhaps his most potent and haunting pictures come from the series portraying Auschwitz in Poland. In 2006, after much negotiation and planning, which required four visits, he shot rooms at the Nazi death camp that were not open to the public, which hadn\u2019t been photographed since 1948. What\u2019s so striking about the spaces, many of which are in the guards\u2019 barracks, is that their crumbling, faded and streaked ocher and cerulean plaster walls are as beautiful as they are foreboding. <\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_230963\" style=\"width: 590px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-230963\" class=\"wp-image-230963 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/\u00a9-Simon-Watson-Stella-Issy-Tennant_Nov-2016_126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/\u00a9-Simon-Watson-Stella-Issy-Tennant_Nov-2016_126.jpg 580w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/\u00a9-Simon-Watson-Stella-Issy-Tennant_Nov-2016_126-525x350.jpg 525w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/\u00a9-Simon-Watson-Stella-Issy-Tennant_Nov-2016_126-120x80.jpg 120w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-230963\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On assignment for <em>Introspective<\/em> magazine last year, Watson shot the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/stella-and-issy-tennant\/\">Edinburgh studio and showroom of Stella and Issy Tennant<\/a>.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cMelancholy plays an important part in my work,\u201d notes Watson. \u201cBut it\u2019s not necessarily negative, it\u2019s often positive. Melancholy doesn\u2019t have to be about darkness, there can be a solace to it.\u201d The sentiment is distinctly Irish. As if to illustrate that point, as I interview Watson by phone from his home in Dublin, he observes that the weather has passed from blues skies to a massive hailstorm to heavy rain despite bright sunlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">India will be the focus of Watson\u2019s next art-photography project.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><a
