Last year, when Fendi<\/a> unveiled its exquisite \u201ctraveling VIP room,\u201d created by Italian designer Cristina Celestino, design critics applauded the mixed marble inlays and recurring earring-back motif, plus the nod to 1950s elegance and Gi\u00f2 Ponti<\/a>. A flurry of breathless press followed, hailing Celestino as a new talent to watch.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s really about using colors, forms and finishes to create atmosphere,\u201d <\/span>she told the <\/span>Telegraph<\/span><\/i><\/a> about her vignette, which is centered by a vanity table in satin-polished brass and pink lacquered wood, walnut and marble. \u201cTo make a place where people can simply feel calm and happy.\u201d What could possibly sound more enticing? <\/span><\/p>\n

After years \u2014 decades, in fact \u2014 of being perceived as old fashioned, vanity tables are becoming cool again, as contemporary designers and upmarket brands step in to revamp their image. Newer pieces such as Scarlet Splendor\u2019s Woman of Paris dressing table<\/a> in teak with resin inlay, designed by Matteo Cibic<\/a>, not only resemble works of art, but they\u2019re also fully functional and supremely luxurious. A<\/span>s Cibic notes, vanity tables are \u201cdefinitely more comfortable and chic than standing in front of a sink.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

At this year\u2019s Salone Internazionale del Mobile in Milan,<\/span> the Future Perfect<\/a><\/span> founder and tastemaker David Alhadeff<\/a> noted Italian design duo <\/span>Dimore Studio<\/span><\/a>\u2019s vanity mirror suspended from a ceiling as part of a general trend toward luxury items with well-defined uses. <\/span>\u201cThere are these very specialized features, almost to the point where they should be built-ins, but they\u2019re a piece of furniture,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n

Vanities, of course, also provide a certain comfort to their owners. \u201cBeauty routines, taking the time to protect what you have, a moment to accessorize, a moment to pause and slow down \u2014 these are all so important now as an antidote to our fast and hectic lives,\u201d says Oona Bannon, creative director of Pinch Design<\/a> in Clapham, South London. \u201cJust thinking about a dressing table makes me feel calm.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

When Pinch was designing the <\/a><\/span>Lana dressing table<\/a>,<\/span> sold at the Future Perfect<\/a>, the goal went beyond creating a space to reflect, store jewelry and pamper. There were concerns about sizing \u2014 \u201csmall dressing tables can easily look apologetic and a little bit twee,\u201d Bannon says \u2014 and how the item would fit in the overall scheme of one\u2019s home.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, Pinch decided that anyone who purchased the Lana was making the space and themselves a priority, \u201cso we didn\u2019t compromise on the size,\u201d Bannon says. Thoughtful storage, including a removable leather-lined tray for fine jewelry, a hidden drawer and a divider, was added. (The unit measures an impressive four feet long and stands two-and-a-half feet high.) <\/span><\/p>\n

For Shanghai-based <\/span>Studio MVW<\/span><\/a>, the <\/span>Jinshi Pink Jade Console #1<\/span><\/a> represents a piece of jewelry for the home, says Virginie Moriette, one half of the duo. \u201c<\/span>Jinshi<\/span><\/i> literally translates from the Chinese language as golden stone,\u201d which is fitting, given the glamorous console\u2019s rose gold-colored anodized stainless steel and gleaming pink jade. That each piece of jade has a \u201cpowder-like transparency,\u201d as Moriette puts it, only underscores the console\u2019s appeal as a sensory space made with beauty in mind.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course, not every piece is meant to indulge all the senses. For some collectors, a vanity table is simply another way to showcase personality<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cA vanity table <\/span>personalizes a built-in response, which sometimes can be kind of boring and relentless<\/span>,\u201d says Los Angeles interior designer Kay Kollar<\/a>, underlining the banality of built-in units. \u201c<\/span>Some clients really want their dressing spaces to reflect their individuality,\u201d or the overall level of design in the home. <\/span><\/p>\n
