Largely regarded as the gemstone capital of India, it’s little surprise that New York jewelry designer Alexis Bittar<\/a> chose to visit the city during a recent vacation. 1. Why were you drawn to Jaipur and the surrounding region of Rajasthan?<\/p>\n

Rajasthan, which is Northern India, is home to some of the more rural parts of the country that are rich in culture and have the most beautiful temples. At the time of year I went, the mustard plants are in full bloom, so the fields were bright yellow. Every time I take a trip like this, I get inspired on so many levels. It stays with me and affects my collections season after season.<\/p>\n\"mirror2\"<\/a>

2. What images and visuals do you most closely associate with that location?<\/p>\n

The image of women \u2014 in full native dress \u2014 walking through the fields with bundles of wood on their heads is ingrained in my mind. Also, the historical, 200-plus year-old temples and buildings with layers of faded paint and chipped wood.<\/p>\n \n

3. What are two words you’d use to describe Jaipur?<\/p>\n

Poetically mind-altering.<\/p>\n \n


4. Please share your favorite image from the board, with a short explanation of why you like it.<\/p>\n

This image is from a beautiful old village that we stumbled upon. The colors on each house created this mural that is indicative of India. [The architecture] just reminded me of all the faces you see\u2014the old men sitting in the market and the children running in the street. You get the best sense of a place by going to local villages and markets; you see how people really live.
