The images they chose are breathtaking conversation-starters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Born in New York City in 1923, Avedon had a stern father, an artistic mother and a beautiful, but troubled, sister. At 18, he wanted to be a poet. By 1945, his work was appearing in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junior Bazaar. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHis first photographs for us were technically very bad,\u201d Brodovitch later recalled. \u201cBut they were not snapshots. . . . Those first pictures of his had freshness and individuality, and they showed enthusiasm and a willingness to take chances.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who else was willing to take chances? Brodovitch and Carmel Snow<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">editor in chief of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harper\u2019s Bazaar<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who soon sent the young talent to fashion\u2019s sacred capital, Paris.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The postwar years were hard in Paris. When Avedon first arrived there, in 1946, it was with an explicit directive from Snow. \u201cDick was tasked with this idea that he was there to rebuild Paris,\u201d explains Martin. Like Avedon himself, they rarely stood still. While he wasn\u2019t the first to use action in fashion photography (in the 1930s, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/martin-munkacsi-1898-1963-hungarian\/\">Martin Munkacsi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/toni-frissell\/art\/\">Toni Frissell<\/a> began creating fashion images of women engaged in sporty scenarios), Avedon was the first to pair such vitality with women wearing couture. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Character and spirit became la mode. Dovima\u2019s graceful silhouette juxtaposed against the wrinkled heft of two shackled elephants. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/dorian-leigh\/\">Dorian Leigh<\/a> laughing and embracing a bicycle racer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/suzy-parker\/\">Suzy Parker<\/a> roller skating across the Place de la Concorde. Sunny Harnett and her cool gaze just daring the roulette table \u2014 and every man in the room \u2014 not to do her bidding. There was always a narrative in an Avedon mise en scene \u2014 whether the background was elaborately staged or stark, the model\u2019s job had forever changed from posing, to acting.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avedon had everything to do with this. His photographs of Americans, says Martin, are not \u201ca glamorized fiction of what it means to be American.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the exhibition features citizens of \u201can odd and quirky and strange and complicated place.\u201d Undoubtedly, it&#8217;s a description that holds true today.<\/p>\n<p>But Avedon was a creator, not an observer, and he made no apologies for this. The sitter and the photographer \u201chave separate ambitions for the image,\u201d he wrote in 1985. \u201cHis need to plead his case probably goes as deep as my need to plead mine, but the control is with me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avedon died of a cerebral hemorrhage in 2004 while on assignment for the <em>New Yorker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\t<div class=\"interstitial-banner
