But the 27-year-old designer, who graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011, was just nervously flitting about his studio in Brooklyn\u2019s Bushwick neighborhood, putting the final touches on pieces for his second solo show, \u201cMidden Heap,\u201d at New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/friedman-benda\/\">Friedman Benda Gallery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working with so many different materials that I feel like an orchestra conductor,\u201d Kahn said over the phone. He was finishing up a huge chandelier inspired by a man o\u2019 war fish that\u2019s composed of 75 pieces of glass. He was also waiting on gels from a factory in Padua, Italy, and once he learned they\u2019d come through, he opted to build a chaise with a fiberglass shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely going to be full-on,\u201d he said of \u201cMidden Heap,\u201d which is on view through December 16. When it comes to exhibitions, full-on is Kahn\u2019s default mode. His first solo show at Friedman Benda last year, \u201cReturn of Saturn: Coming of Age in the 21st Century,\u201d was an immersive experience that felt part arty funhouse, part your kooky aunt\u2019s living room. Photo by James Orlando, courtesy of Friedman Benda and Misha Kahn<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The art likewise defied categorization: chandeliers woven from see-through aquarium hoses; shapeless floor lamps made of resin and inflated with a bouncy-house blower; a Pepto-pink chaise cheekily named Ungrateful Little Piggy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Absurdist? Sure, but that\u2019s how Misha Kahn operates. Photo by Jon Wang<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Wearing a black polo shirt with a splashy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/memphis-group\/\">Memphis Group<\/a>\u2013style pattern, he rattled off an unorthodox inspiration for \u201cMidden Heap\u201d: trash, particularly trash found on the glass- and plastic-strewn beaches of Dead Horse Bay, in Queens. So much of the work is spontaneous and more intuitive and layered.
