By the frantic sound of his voice, you\u2019d think that Misha Kahn<\/a> was cramming for midterm exams. But the 27-year-old designer, who graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2011, was just nervously flitting about his studio in Brooklyn\u2019s Bushwick neighborhood, putting the final touches on pieces for his second solo show, \u201cMidden Heap,\u201d at New York\u2019s Friedman Benda Gallery<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019re working with so many different materials that I feel like an orchestra conductor,\u201d Kahn said over the phone. He was finishing up a huge chandelier inspired by a man o\u2019 war fish that\u2019s composed of 75 pieces of glass. He was also waiting on gels from a factory in Padua, Italy, and once he learned they\u2019d come through, he opted to build a chaise with a fiberglass shell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s definitely going to be full-on,\u201d he said of \u201cMidden Heap,\u201d which is on view through December 16. When it comes to exhibitions, full-on is Kahn\u2019s default mode. His first solo show at Friedman Benda last year, \u201cReturn of Saturn: Coming of Age in the 21st Century,\u201d was an immersive experience that felt part arty funhouse, part your kooky aunt\u2019s living room. The walls were painted excrement brown, while paint-splattered floor panels gave the impression of Jackson Pollock<\/a>\u2019s worst nightmare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The art likewise defied categorization: chandeliers woven from see-through aquarium hoses; shapeless floor lamps made of resin and inflated with a bouncy-house blower; a Pepto-pink chaise cheekily named Ungrateful Little Piggy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Absurdist? Sure, but that\u2019s how Misha Kahn operates. As he explained at a recent Cooper Hewitt Museum-sponsored studio visit in Bushwick, the furnishings people want for their homes is obvious enough, but if you go about producing what they like, \u201cyou end up making things people have seen before.\u201d Clearly, he relishes doing the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wearing a black polo shirt with a splashy Memphis Group<\/a>\u2013style pattern, he rattled off an unorthodox inspiration for \u201cMidden Heap\u201d: trash, particularly trash found on the glass- and plastic-strewn beaches of Dead Horse Bay, in Queens. The debris there \u201ctakes on such an odd character,\u201d he says, and \u201cthe push and pull of man versus nature.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of this show has been me working with things to the point where your eye has to go around them, and you don\u2019t know what\u2019s on the back side,\u201d he adds. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot more engaging to work that way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Art Nouveau<\/a> motifs are apparent in the new work, as is Kahn\u2019s fascination with the altering forces of time and Mother Nature. \u201cIt\u2019s been interesting, seeing what\u2019s happened with all these major water-filled apocalypses,\u201d he said of the recent uptick in massive hurricanes and devastating floods. \u201cLiving in New York and being so close to the water, I think we feel this imminent sense of this thing encroaching on us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His new work reflects this anxiety: a spiky blown-glass shade inserted into a steel fixture that resembles an Anglerfish; Prince purple resin sconces; hanging lights that nod to Austrian artist Franz West<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friedman Benda<\/a> \u201cshows so many pieces that are perfectly conceived objects, and I felt a lot of pressure to be that person, too,\u201d Kahn said, reflecting on his place in the gallery\u2019s roster. \u201cBut there\u2019s been this realization that I\u2019m not. So much of the work is spontaneous and more intuitive and layered. I think it\u2019s a departure.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n\t
