For the bold and daring, adding a sculptural seat or a throne-like chair can pack quite a visual punch. And for a more laid-back approach, accumulated vintage finds can feel quite unified when gathered together around a well-worn table. That\u2019s the mentality with which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/m-naeve\/\">designer and dealer Margaret Naeve<\/a> approached a family\u2019s intimate breakfast nook in Houston. \u201cThere was an opportunity to tell an interesting story that was also functional in this vignette,\u201d Naeve notes. \u201cWhen I mix chairs, I am mindful of scale, particularly with thigh height and material.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She chose side chairs and a stool by<a href=\"https:\/\/mario.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/egg-collective\/shop\/\"> Egg Collective<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/bddw\/\">BDDW<\/a> ladder-back chair to surround the marble-topped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/eero-saarinen\/furniture\/tables\/dining-room-tables\/\">Eero Saarinen table<\/a>. The spacious room could easily accommodate a strong point of view with its 16-foot ceilings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo embrace this huge scale, we played with levels throughout and we were able to be quite daring with our approach,\u201d says Godrich. In a long and narrow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photo\/eclectic-dining-room-beverly-hills-ca\/1180953\/\">Beverly Hills dining room, Andrews<\/a> had one large dictate: \u201cThe client wanted to seat as many as possible, but I don\u2019t like anything that\u2019s too normal or obvious.\u201d His solution? A double-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/banquette-seating-for-sale\/\">banquette<\/a> topped with comfy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/contemporary-throw-pillows\/\">decorative pillows<\/a>. To achieve this in a Greenwich Village townhouse, she went for something bold. \u201cI always like the idea of throne chairs at the end of a table. Here, there is a round table, but it is still the same concept,\u201d she says. For her own eat-in kitchen in Los Angeles, Smith used &#8220;a variety of seating options, because it feels collected over time.\u201d She surrounded the 18th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/origin\/irish\/\">Irish table<\/a> with a velvet settee and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/dining-room-chairs\/\">antique chairs<\/a> from Europe that have a caramelized, aged-oak patina. The designer finds that \u201cdining chairs are a great way to connect the dots between colors. The settee has elements of the blue and red stripe.
