In renovating a traditional house in Nashville<\/a>, Ray Booth, a principal at McAlpine<\/a>, paid special attention to contemporizing the primary bedroom. \u201cWe wanted to bring a youthful and light-filled palette to what we inherited, which was a dark and heavy space,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A particular boost to the vibe is provided by  Valeria Nascimento<\/a>\u2019s Blossom Burst<\/em> plaster wall sculpture, along with a six-armed chandelier with white shades and a Dmitriy & Co.<\/a> bed upholstered in a Christopher Hyland sage fabric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pair of German Biedermeier chests<\/a>, 1820\u201340, hark back to the home\u2019s traditional roots, while the Visual Comfort table lamps<\/a> inhabit a middle ground, their trad silhouettes offset by a mod white porcelain finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe always want to find some sense of peacefulness and tranquility in a bedroom,\u201d Booth says. \u201cThe feel should be ethereal and otherworldly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a modern home overlooking Northern California\u2019s Ross Valley<\/a>, Catherine Kwong<\/a> took advantage of the leafy vista through the windows of the upstairs bedroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe tried to create a space that felt like it was nestled up in the treetops,\u201d the designer explains. \u201cWe complemented the foliage with a sage-green limewash paint and layered in additional textures: a soft rug, a leather-wrapped Croft House<\/a> headboard and Craftsman<\/a>-inspired Lawson-Fenning<\/a> nightstands.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near the glass door to the terrace, Frits Henningsen<\/a>\u2019s FH429 Signature chair<\/a>, coupled with a patinated-bronze Tee side table by Christophe Delcourt<\/a> for Kooku<\/a>, provides a \u201cperfect perch for reflection,\u201d Kwong says, noting that the space overall conveys a \u201csense of easy calm.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alessandra Branca<\/a> wanted a calming and invigorating atmosphere in the main bedroom suite of an eclectic Chicago home<\/a> she revamped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe woven Madagascar raffia<\/a> on the walls gives the space a relaxed, hushed feel, while the brass provides the fun kick that updates the room,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each piece here packs enough expressive punch to balance the others, leading to an unexpected harmony. An acrylic-and-brass Bernhardt<\/a> bed rhymes nicely with a Stephen Antonson<\/a> plaster chandelier, and two abstract collages<\/a> from Gerald Bland<\/a> seem to take 3D form in a pair of tabletop cast-resin Totems by Ashley Hicks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe colors are a mix of summer and winter,\u201d Branca adds, \u201cso the room is always fresh no matter the season.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis project was for a young Francophile family that loves indoor-outdoor living and entertaining,\u201d Tara Shaw<\/a> says of a house in Metairie, Louisiana<\/a>. \u201cThe goal was to bring the outdoors into the interior design.\u201d That extended to the primary bedroom, which was flooded with sunlight and which Shaw swathed in soft neutrals grounded by black accents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although she maintained a certain minimalism, moments of historical opulence appear in the form of an Empire chair<\/a> and ottoman<\/a> and a delicate brass chandelier<\/a>. The 19th-century Swedish sofa<\/a> at the foot of the bed lends the space an organic feel that ties back to the outdoor vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI used contemporary photography from Italy<\/a> in juxtaposition with the antiques in the room,\u201d Shaw says. \u201cA bedroom should be a retreat from the world and the rest of the house. It should give you a sense of a safe haven and luxurious comfort.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kerry Joyce<\/a> was commissioned to align the inside and outside of a Beverly Hills house<\/a> whose architecture evokes the French Riviera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe exterior was Mediterranean, but its interior was sorely missing authentic detailing that was appropriate to its facade,\u201d he says. \u201cI completely redesigned the interior architecture so that it felt original to the home but still timeless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the second-floor primary bedroom, overlooking a mature garden behind the house, Joyce created a custom four-poster bed<\/a> topped with a striking canopy and outfitted in Kerry Joyce Textiles. He accompanied it with a Rose Tarlow<\/a> bench and an antique rug from Mansour<\/a> suited to the era of the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Says Joyce, \u201cI want the bedrooms I design to be places of tranquility and well-being.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The owners of a contemporary house in Texas Hill Country<\/a> wanted to transform the entire vibe of their open-plan abode. \u201cTheir ask was to \u2018un-design\u2019 the home,\u201dsays Melanie Raines<\/a>, \u201cto bring down the scale and increase the level of intimacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To give the bedroom a lived-in feel, Raines made the couple\u2019s 1970s Guido Faleschini<\/a> for Mariani<\/a> bed, which the designer had reupholstered in custom leather, the centerpiece and placed it on an expansive vintage rug<\/a>. The disk-shaped sconces are by Allied Maker<\/a>, and the ceiling pendant is from Apparatus<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was important to layer found and collected idiosyncratic pieces that each told the story of the couple. In this way, the design is a memory keeper,\u201d Raines says. \u201cFor instance, the bed was reminiscent of his old motorcycle jacket from when the two met and began dating.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hoped to create a serene oasis in the busy city,\u201d Brian Murphy<\/a> says of his concept for this townhouse<\/a> bedroom in the bustling Manhattan neighborhood of Chelsea. To achieve the desired effect, he came up with a calming symmetrical layout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI started with a silk Nepalese Greek-key<\/a> rug,\u201d he says, \u201cand found the Art Deco\u2013style<\/a> bed, which I dressed in Pratesi linens, at Dennis Miller<\/a>. The bed is flanked by a pair of Paul Frankl chests<\/a> and Murano lamps<\/a> from 1stDibs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other 1stDibs finds include a pair of Jean-Michel Frank<\/a> console tables and two Venini<\/a> mirrors in blue frames, on either side of the marble Sir John Soane fireplace mantel, from Chesneys<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Echoing the style of the bed are Deco-inspired armchairs<\/a> in chocolate-brown fabric. The artworks on the walls were the fruits of a visit to Art Basel Miami Beach, where Murphy acquired several intriguing pieces by up-and-coming artists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interior designer Sarah Shetter<\/a> collaborated with architect John Bertram to revive an iconic mid-century-modern house by Robert Skinner<\/a> in Beverly Hills. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the home\u2019s origins, they didn\u2019t employ typical mid-century colors. \u201cInstead, we used deep greens and blues and oranges,\u201d Shetter told Introspective,<\/em> \u201cwhich makes the house feel elegant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the main bedroom, the rich color scheme is most evident in the vintage Swedish rug<\/a>, while the custom bed, pair of T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings nightstands<\/a> and dual wall lamps from Rewire<\/a> nod to the surrounding architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coziness is in play here as well. Even though the 1962 structure is a modern masterpiece, \u201cit\u2019s also modest, which we like,\u201d Shetter said. \u201cIt\u2019s a real family house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
