Even the <em>Wall Street Journal<\/em> picked up the story, calling it \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/the-great-bookshelf-debate-of-2018-spine-in-or-out-1517167114\">The Great Bookshelf Debate of 2018<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Does this represent a new chapter for your sleepy little book nook?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A home library \u2014 whether one shelf or an entire room \u2014 doesn\u2019t cycle through trends as quickly as, say, the color palette of the season. But that doesn\u2019t mean <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/decorating-with-books\/\">book-arranging trends<\/a> don\u2019t come and go. Photo by Eric Laignel<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m noticing people don\u2019t have books the way they used to because they have Kindles,\u201d says Jayne Michaels, one half of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/2michaels\/\">interior design firm 2Michaels<\/a> which she founded with her sister, Joan. Clients are increasingly collecting art and design books, primarily hardcovers, to display \u2014 but these are not necessarily read cover to cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art books tend to be oversized and may not fit in the bookshelf unless they are horizontally stacked, Michaels explains. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/fawn-galli-inteteriors\/\">designer Fawn Galli<\/a>, horizontal stacking is also popular among homeowners who mix objects in with the books. \u201cA shelf should have an odd number of objects as it feels more balanced to the eye,\u201d says Galli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michaels suggests that the rule of thirds is in play. The brouhaha began with an <a href=\"http:\/\/observer.com\/2014\/02\/book-design\/#ixzz2sb8nBFP3\"><em>Observer<\/em> article<\/a> about books as decoration and led to a defense of the practice in Slate, which was provocatively titled \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/the_eye\/2014\/02\/11\/arranging_your_books_by_color_is_not_a_moral_failure.html\">Arranging Your Books by Color Is Not a Moral Failure<\/a>.\u201d In it, Kristin Hohenadel wrote, \u201cOrganizing your books by color is the kind of harmless DIY decorating experiment you can try and take back.\u201d And really, that&#8217;s the best sort of DIY project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pinterest includes advice for wrapping your books in paper, if you\u2019re into neutrals. In sourcing the books and objects, she visualized a distinctive imaginary client: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ludwig-mies-van-der-rohe\/\">Lugwig Mies van der Rohe<\/a>. The rest of the space could be described as mid-century masculine, with dark wood furniture and concrete pillars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Badwan found a vintage shop in Detroit carrying the designs of former Cranbrook students who had settled in the Midwest. She combined these with contemporary sculptures from makers in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and international designs from 1stDibs. Photo by Costas Picadas<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no shame in buying new books to style \u2014 within reason. \u201cIt\u2019s been a pleasure to work with clients who really love books,\u201d says Michaels. Some of these homeowners are avid readers, while others see books as collectors\u2019 items \u2014 a tangible rarity in an Internet age.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of these will inevitably end up on the coffee table for maximum admiration. \u201cMany clients have books to fill bookcases, but coffee-table books really polish off the room, style-wise,\u201d says Galli. \u201cThey speak to the personality of the client.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the backward-book controversy, Michaels thinks that flipping books \u201cspine in\u201d obscures the personality of the owner. \u201cIf the books are all turned, it doesn\u2019t tell you anything about the person, their interests or character,\u201d she says.
