The fanciful foyer of Jamie Creel’s Paris abode<\/p><\/div>\n

Jamie Creel is the owner and curator of the Upper East Side boutique Creel and Gow<\/a>, which overflows with exquisite objects<\/a>, from deconstructed lobsters<\/a>, taxidermy birds<\/a> and prehistoric fossils<\/a> to mounted crystals<\/a>, silver-coated shells<\/a> and exotic textiles<\/a>. Not unlike his New York shop, Creel\u2019s Paris apartment is a veritable treasure trove \u2014 a modern-day cabinet of curiosities<\/a>. That said, the eclectic apartment has a distinctly French<\/a> feel; it juxtaposes antique and modern French with contemporary art objects<\/a> and furniture that often have personal significance, many by artists in his close circle of friends in Paris.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile my apartment in New York is filled with family memorabilia, portraits<\/a>, paintings<\/a>, silver<\/a>, furniture<\/a> and books<\/a> passed down from generation to generation,\u201d says Creel, \u201cmy Paris apartment has pretty much only things that I have picked since I first arrived here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Creel first moved from Manhattan to Paris in the late 1990s, when he opened l’Atelier du Savon, a luxury soap company. Since 1999, he and his partner, Marco Scarani, creative director for entrepreneur Chris Burch, have spent several months each year in a magnificent pied-\u00e0-terre in a 17th-century townhouse in the chic Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e8s district. (They now split their time between there, Manhattan and Tangier.)<\/p>\n

Located on the Rue de Seine, the nearly 3,000-square-foot apartment has windows overlooking the Louvre and the neoclassical<\/a> dome of the Institut de France. Once lived in by Queen Margot, known for her juicy memoirs, the property was acquired in a French candle auction, a romantic tradition held over from the 17th century in which the bidding ends with the expiration of a candle flame. Before moving in, Creel and Scarani spent about a year and a half renovating the space, which had been empty for decades.<\/p>\n

\n

Master Bedroom<\/h2>\n\"Paris\n

The elegant mirror over the bed was designed by Herv\u00e9 Van der Straeten<\/a>. \u201cHis work combines timeless modernity with noble materials,\u201d says Creel of the designer, well known for his iconic product designs like Dior<\/a>\u2019s J\u2019adore perfume bottle. (The two are also close friends; Creel was even the best man at Van der Straeten\u2019s wedding.)<\/p>\n

In front of the bed is a Louis XVI<\/a> bench found at auction. An obsessive collector, Creel goes to the Parisian auction house Drouot on a daily basis. \u201cWhen I\u2019m in Paris, my day literally revolves around the auctions and previews there,\u201d he says. \u201cI feel as if I\u2019m going through France\u2019s attic.\u201d The vintage, gilded, glass-plateau cocktail table is by Maison Ramsay<\/a>.<\/p>\n\"gallery\n

On one wall of the bedroom, a painting by French Surrealist<\/a> artist Alain le Yaouanc<\/a> hangs above a cabinet<\/a> topped by a Pierre Cardin<\/a> lamp and a pair of mounted, speckled ostrich eggs from Creel and Gow.<\/p>\n

Master Bathroom<\/h2>\n\"Striped


\nThe master bath sports hand-painted wallpaper and a nickel and brass tub from the 19th century<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sitting Room<\/h2>\n\"sitting\n

A set of double doors added by Creel during the renovations connects the master bedroom to the sitting room. Here, twin neoclassical cabinets<\/a> from the 1940s<\/a> bookend the fireplace<\/a>, which is sheathed in slate, over which hangs an 18th-century<\/a> French gilt mirror<\/a>. At the center of the mantel is an expressive bronze Harry Bertoia<\/a> screen, which Creel loves for its \u201cvery organic and textural\u201d qualities.<\/p>\n

Several Bertoia works are scattered throughout the apartment, all of which are from the couple’s good friend Charles Sevigny, the legendary American expat and designer. Says Creel, \u201cSevigny, who will turn 100 this June, spent most of his life in Paris and Tangier. We bought his house there \u2014 the famous Dar Zero, high atop the Casbah, which overlooks all of Tangier.\u201d Also in the sitting room is a sensual hammered-brass chair by Philippe Hiquily<\/a> from Galerie Yves Gastou<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

Library<\/h2>\n\"library\n

\u201cThe library is without question my favorite room in the apartment, as it is filled with things we have found on our travels,\u201d Creel says. \u201cEvery piece has its own story.\u201d The room\u2019s centerpiece is Bertoia\u2019s whimsical Dandelion<\/em> sculpture. The plush Maison Jansen<\/a> sofa and armchairs came \u201cfrom a dear friend, textile designer Lisa Fine, who had put them in storage and never used them. She called me up when we got the apartment and offered them to me.\u201d<\/p>\n\"fireplace\n

On the vintage Chinese lacquered cocktail table<\/a>, mantelpiece and bookshelves<\/a>, treasures from their various travels include mineral specimens<\/a>, architectural models<\/a> (one of Creel\u2019s passions) and taxidermic<\/a> tropical birds from Creel and Gow. \u201cThe shop\u2019s ethos is sustainable and cruelty-free,\u201d Creel explains. \u201cWe have our own taxidermist, and we only treat animals or coral that have died of natural causes.\u201d The library also has a hanging screen sculpture by Bertoia.<\/p>\n

\n

Guest Bedroom<\/h2>\n\"guest\n

Cozy and elegant, the guest bedroom looks onto the dome of the Institut de France. The walls, canopy and Directoire<\/a> bedspread are all covered in Braqueni\u00e9’s Monuments d\u2019Egypte fabric from Pierre Frey. The butterfly specimens<\/a> are from Creel and Gow.<\/p>\n

\n

Dining Nook<\/h2>\n\"Jamie\n

With its long, mirrored bar and banquette seating<\/a> in back, the kitchen is a sumptuous riff on a French caf\u00e9. Herb specimens hung on the wall, from Creel and Gow, were originally collected by 19th-century naturalist \u00c9mile Deyrolle<\/a>, and now hang above an antique backgammon table<\/a>. Chairs<\/a> and pillows<\/a> are covered in yellow and- hite geometric-patterned fabric by Martyn Lawrence Bullard<\/a>, and the small round table is by French neoclassical designer Olivier Gagn\u00e8re<\/a>.<\/p>\n
