href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photo\/country-mid-century-modern-kitchen-piccadilly-circus-gb\/2837961\/\">Hugh Leslie-designed kitchen and dining space<\/a>, occupying an early 1860s terrace house in London. \u201cWe found the antique painted dresser, which was the starting point,\u201d Leslie says. \u201cWe wanted the room to feel furnished rather than being simply a fitted kitchen,\u201d he adds, describing the modern mix that includes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/thonet\/furniture\/\">Thonet<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/charles-and-ray-eames\/furniture\/\">Eames<\/a> chairs alongside button-tufted seating. He created the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/technique\/lacquered\/\">lacquered<\/a> kitchen cupboards to add color and pattern, while a bold sofa of his design anchors the seating area. \u201cBeing on the ground floor in a six-story house, natural light was limited here, so we wanted the colors to be as bright and cheerful as possible,\u201d Leslie says. The result is a crisp, white space punctuated with bright, uplifting color from the ground up. \u201cOrange is my signature, and its a very happy hue,\u201d McBournie says of painted checkerboard floor, which reiterates the mid-century vibe.
