One thing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/martin-kobus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Martin Kobus<\/a> wanted to articulate with this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/2017-san-francisco-decorators-showcase-san-francisco-ca\/236782\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">room at the 2017 San Francisco Decorator Showcase<\/a>, held in a 1904 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/classical-revival-style-furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Classical Revival<\/a> home, was the power of black. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe think black is always a win,\u201d he says. \u201cWith the darkness surrounding the room, it allows the people in the room to stand out. Also, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">art<\/a> is magnified by black.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, some of the art was inspired by the works of Kobus&#8217;s fellow Netherlands native <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/hendrik-kerstens\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hendrik Kerstens<\/a>. The decorator riffed on his countryman\u2019s contemporary take on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/portrait-paintings\/style\/old-masters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Old Master portraits<\/a> with two large light-box photos of an intern at his firm. White 1950s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/augusto-bozzi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Augusto Bozzi<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/saporiti\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saporiti<\/a> chairs also pop against the dark walls, while black ceramics from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/elan-atelier\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elan Atelier<\/a>, on the shelves and on a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/side-tables\/?color=black\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">side table<\/a> reinforce the color scheme. Having moved to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/north-shore-family-home-highland-park-il\/209452\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">home on Chicago\u2019s North Shore<\/a> to raise their family, its young owners asked designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/wendylabrum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wendy Labrum<\/a> to extrapolate from their favorite watering holes when updating the living room and contiguous library. So, she plunged both into black. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe ceilings and tall windows actually allow so much light in during the day that it can feel bright despite the dark tone,\u201d says Labrum. She introduced contrasts to the shadowy palette with persimmon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/sofas\/style\/chesterfield\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chesterfield sofas<\/a> inspired by Chicago\u2019s Soho House, light oak floors and jute and flat-weave <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/rugs-carpets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">rugs<\/a>. And so it was for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/sean-anderson-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sean Anderson<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/old-creek-memphis-tn\/251342\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">house in suburban Memphis<\/a>, where he experimented with the all-black interior he\u2019d been craving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the primary bedroom, the color creates \u201ca cave-like feel,\u201d Anderson observes. \u201cThere\u2019s no better sleep for me. I feel wrapped in warmth. It\u2019s so cozy, and it highlights all the textures of the room \u2014 the wood tones, the patinated metals, the linens.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A scavenger since his youth on a Mississippi farm, Anderson filled the space with items that pop against the black: a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/lighting\/chandeliers-pendant-lights\/material\/copper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">copper pendant<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/revival-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Revival Home<\/a>, in Chattanooga; an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/antique-workbenches\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1800s workbench<\/a> at the foot of the bed; a 1920s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/industrial-steel-table\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">industrial steel table<\/a> with a zinc top; and a working early-1900s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/vintage-electric-fan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">table fan<\/a>. Black <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/building-garden\/doors-gates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">door panels<\/a> serve as a headboard, and a reproduction Old Master portrait hangs against a curtain of chains he painted black and aged outside. \u201cI\u2019m such a fan of layering,\u201d Anderson says. Black was an obvious choice, but \u201cI refuse to just paint a wall black. That feels like a murder dorm room.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, she manifested ebon \u00e9lan with an emphasis on textural elements: a coffee-stained parquet floor, buffed Venetian plaster walls and ceiling, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/nobilis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nobilis<\/a> linen shades and a sink of Nero Marquina marble. So does the black-and-white grass cloth backing the shelves, which adds texture and layering without distracting from the objects on show.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adler worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/todd-merrill-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Todd Merrill<\/a> to customize his popular tufted sectional, expanding its function to accommodate lounging on one side and seating at a custom table on the other, supplemented by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/jean-prouve\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean Prouv\u00e9<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/jean-prouve-standard-chair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Standard chairs<\/a>. Case in point: the model <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/nolita-penthouse-new-york-ny\/291372\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">penthouse apartment the firm designed for 75 Kenmare<\/a>, a 38-unit condominium building in the Nolita neighborhood of Manhattan, and more particularly, the study, which features black walls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe residence has great natural light,\u201d says Bowen, \u201cand there were plenty of opportunities for lighter spaces elsewhere.\u201d Here, he and his team wanted an arresting room that could operate as a foil for bold neon works by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/keith-haring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keith Haring<\/a>. These flank a contemporary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/desks-writing-tables\/material\/lacquer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lacquer desk<\/a> paired with a 1970s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/steel-tubular-chairs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tubular steel chair<\/a>. Across the room, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/serge-mouille\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Serge Mouille<\/a> floor lamp casts light over a custom sofa, and an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/isamu-noguchi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Isamu Noguchi<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/isamu-noguchi-akari-light-sculpture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Akari<\/a> table lamp brightens a two-tier <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/bar-carts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">bar cart<\/a>. So, she gave the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/storage-case-pieces\/cabinets\/material\/oak\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">oak cabinets<\/a> a matte black stain that allowed the grain to come through, then sealed it with wax, giving it the subtlest light-catching sheen. \u201cI chose not to have any hardware on the cabinets,\u201d she adds. Why? To keep the attention on the tactile quality of the wood grain, of course. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The success of this space lies in its pristine simplicity. But her client for this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/sag-harbor-sag-harbor-ny\/291362\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sag Harbor home<\/a>, the actress Ellen Pompeo, \u201cis unique and doesn\u2019t like to do anything everyone else is doing.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Pompeo\u2019s contrarian tastes in mind, Stanley explored the other end of the spectrum throughout the residence, most surprisingly on the screened porch. The black, she points out, creates a dramatic frame for the lush green landscape around the barn-like structure. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA screened porch is one of my favorite rooms in a house,\u201d she says, \u201cbecause it allows you to feel outside without actually being outside. Although admitting that black \u201cis a pretty bold choice, especially in a small space like this bathroom,\u201d he feels it&#8217;s right for a Manhattan apartment, since it channels that quintessentially metropolitan style, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/art-deco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Art Deco<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ralph-lauren\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ralph Lauren<\/a> sconces of ribbed glass with chrome accents, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/restoration-hardware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">RH<\/a> mirror above the sink and more chrome on the bathroom fixtures all have a glamorous polish that emphasizes the reflectivity of the black glazed tiles, making the whole composition pitch-perfect Deco swank. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, O\u2019Donnell made sure to build in relief in the form of a white <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/carrara-marble\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Carrara marble<\/a> floor and sink and by leaving a band of white above the tiles. The retreat is known for its emphasis on fresh foods, many grown on the premises. To enhance the culinary experience, Jason Bell, Blackberry Farm\u2019s director of design, wanted to make the wine cellar in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/striped-maple-walland-tn\/179922\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one of the property\u2019s guest houses<\/a> a noteworthy feature. \u201cWe liked how using black allowed the view to the wine cellar to have more depth,\u201d he notes. One wall is covered in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/cork\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cork<\/a>, but everything else, including the hallway, is swathed in Benjamin Moore\u2019s Black Beauty, whose richness permitted liberal use without the risk of making the space gloomy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/arteriors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arteriors<\/a> chandelier hangs over the custom table in the foreground. Taylor complemented this with a slab of Cosmic Black granite atop the stainless-steel island. The pitchy composition anchors the open-plan space.
