Laura Aviva may be on the road more than half the year, but for her, there\u2019s still no place like home. The founder of L\u2019Aviva Home<\/a>, Aviva traverses the globe, collaborating with artisans from India to Morocco to Burkina Faso to create her collection of home goods, textiles and furnishings.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Los Angeles native has lived in New York City since 2000 and in her current home \u2014 a loft in the heart of Soho \u2014 for a decade. She moved into the space just as she launched L\u2019Aviva Home. \u201cIt was the perfect opportunity for me to design a flexible space that could morph easily as my business grew,\u201d she says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overall, Aviva gravitates to a neutral palette with streamlined furnishings. \u201cThe look is quite clean,\u201d she notes, \u201cbut it takes some clever machinations to keep it feeling that way!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main Living Area<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe anchor of this room is a large concrete table<\/a> that we designed,\u201d says Aviva. \u201cIt\u2019s a true workhorse \u2014 the team works, shares meals and has client meetings around it.\u201d She purposefully designed the space with a clean aesthetic: \u201cI stuck to a strict black-and-white color scheme. So many materials, samples, colors and textures cross our desks from workshops all over the world. The idea was for this space to be as neutral a canvas as possible.\u201d At the back, she maintained an open, streamlined feeling by installing floor-to-ceiling glass accordion doors to set this area apart from the sitting room, and she outfitted the space with pieces like A<\/a>TRA’s ALA mahogany bench<\/a><\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sitting Room<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis room is both studio and personal,\u201d Aviva says. The couch is covered in fabric from her Khovar Collection. \u201cThe women in a region of northeastern India have a tradition of doing mud paintings on the walls of their homes,\u201d Aviva explains. \u201cIt\u2019s a matrimonial rite of passage performed every year. Then, the monsoons come and wash the paintings away until they start again.\u201d She read about the tradition in the World of Interiors<\/em> magazine and became \u201ctotally enchanted by it and the scale of the lyrical imagery.\u201d She worked with a women’s co-op to commission paintings in the same mud used in the house paintings, which she then translated into digital files. Now, the patterns are available as fabrics and wallcoverings. Here, Aviva combines three motifs: L\u2019Aviva Home\u2019s Leaf and Flower wallpapers are framed on the wall, and the Vine pattern is used to upholster the sofa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Work Nook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Tucked next to the staircase (which leads to the roof deck) is Aviva\u2019s \u201cpure work nook.\u201d The desk<\/a> is one of her \u201cfavorite-ever pieces of furniture,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s from an iconic and fabled Los Angeles restaurant, the Spanish Kitchen. It had been open since the 1930s, but mysteriously closed in the late ’60s and sat completely untouched, with the tables still set, for decades. At one point, friends \u2014 quite illicitly! \u2014 hoisted this desk out the window and gave it to me. It\u2019s traveled with me ever since.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the wall is Aviva\u2019s inspiration board, made of magnetized brass panels that the L\u2019Aviva Home team patinated. A wooden Senufo stool<\/a> serves as her desk chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Master Bedroom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As in the main room, Aviva limited the palette in her bedroom. \u201cI feel best around all black and white,\u201d she says. \u201cThis is a wholly no-clutter space. I\u2019m also very particular and passionate about sheets: all white linen, all the time. The best I\u2019ve found \u2014 and I\u2019ve tried a huge range \u2014 are from Rough Linen, in California.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rest of the room\u2019s furnishings are a masterful mix of her personal designs sourced from around the world. On the bed is a L\u2019Aviva Home striped Moroccan pompom blanket. She commissioned the headboard, made of a basket weave of ca\u00f1a fleche fibers, from her team of artisans in Tuch\u00edn, Colombia. The pair of hanging brass lanterns<\/a> were made by L\u2019Aviva Home\u2019s Egyptian workshop, and the abac\u00e1 rug is from the Philippines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lunches are a big deal for Aviva and her team. On the brand\u2019s @lavivahome Instagram, there\u2019s a dedicated Stories feature dubbed \u201cl\u2019a Lunches\u201d that showcases the meals Aviva whips up, such as kamut pasta with ricotta salata<\/em> and honeynut squash. \u201cI cook lunch for our team, and any friends and\/or clients who may be passing by, daily,\u201d she says. \u201cI also host dinners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A pair of L\u2019Aviva Home lamps made in Egypt hang above the custom-built bar. Aviva uses the assorted market bags, from Morocco and Mexico, at the Union Square Greenmarket each week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dining Area<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The custom concrete table in the communal space can sit up to 20 people, and Aviva sets it with a m\u00e9lange of surprising finds and her own creations. \u201cThe plates are from Ikea,\u201d she says. \u201cThey are huge and weigh a ton. I love their heft.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hand-dyed indigo napkins are made by a master artisan she works with in Burkina Faso. The hand-hammered candleholders<\/a> are from L\u2019Aviva Home\u2019s copper workshop in Michoac\u00e1n, Mexico, and the beeswax candles are from Oaxaca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The black-and-white palette continues in the streamlined bathroom. The Rombus lantern is a L\u2019Aviva Home design from Granada, Spain. Aviva sourced the cotton bath mats from A Vida Portuguesa, in Lisbon, bringing them back \u201cby the handful.\u201d The yukata<\/em> robe is made in Japan by Aviva exclusively for the Shibui Spa at the Greenwich Hotel in Tribeca.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
