As space was limited, every inch of wall \u2014 from floor to ceiling \u2014 was used to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/how-to-arrange-wall-art\/\">display pieces<\/a> of various shapes and sizes. Still admired today for its eclectic charm, the salon-style hang offers endless ways to transform a room and create a unique atmosphere. To give it a cohesive look, we limited the number of fabrics, using the same printed-cotton chintz for the curtains and many of the upholstered pieces. And since there was no particular architectural detailing, we added trompe l\u2019oeil panels to give some interest to the uncluttered walls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This subtle approach, however, was destined to change. \u201cShortly after the project was completed, our clients showed us a portfolio of early-19th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/prints-works-on-paper\/animal-prints-works-on-paper\/material\/engraving\/\">bird engravings<\/a> they had just inherited.<\/p>\n<p>They weren\u2019t just engravings, though \u2014 an early artist had embellished them with gouache, embroidery and appliqu\u00e9d fabric, making for a spectacularly charming collection.
