Some are industry pioneers, like Pritzker Prize\u2013winning architect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/zaha-hadid\/furniture\/\">Zaha Hadid<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/florence-knoll\/furniture\/\">Florence Knoll<\/a>, who died in January of 2019 at age 101. Others are still developing their styles and establishing their careers but have already attracted a lot of attention, such as New York lighting designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/bec-brittain\/\">Bec Brittain<\/a> and Ljubljana, Slovenia\u2013based product and interior designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/nika-zupanc\/furniture\/\">Nika Zupanc<\/a>. She studied with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/eliel-saarinen\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eliel Saarinen<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/cranbrook-academy-of-art-since-1932\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cranbrook Academy of Art<\/a>, in Michigan; trained under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/walter-gropius\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Walter Gropius<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/marcel-breuer\/\">Marcel Breuer<\/a> in Cambridge, Massachusetts; and learned from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ludwig-mies-van-der-rohe\/\">Mies van der Rohe<\/a> at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iit.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Illinois Institute of Technology<\/a>, in Chicago. In 1941, she moved to New York and met Hans Knoll, who was starting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/knoll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">his own furniture company<\/a> (and whom she married in 1946). Florence rapidly became a key driver of the firm\u2019s creative vision, and soon her friends <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/eero-saarinen\/\">Eero Saarinen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/harry-bertoia\/\">Harry Bertoia<\/a> and Mies van der Rohe were collaborating with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Florence\u2019s vision of total design \u2014 architecture, interior design, textiles, manufacturing \u2014 was realized through the Knoll Planning Unit, which created uncluttered, open workspace environments that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/florence-knoll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">set the tone for corporate interiors in postwar America<\/a>. She took over as president of the company after Hans died, in 1955, stepping down in 1960 to concentrate on design direction and development. But that didn\u2019t stop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/zaha-hadid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Zaha Hadid<\/a>. In 2004, the Iraqi-British architect and designer became the first female winner of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, and in 2016, she was the first woman to be awarded the Royal Gold Medal by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecture.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Royal Institute of British Architects<\/a>. Hadid\u2019s visually powerful buildings \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.londonaquaticscentre.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">London Aquatics Center<\/a> for the 2012 Summer Olympics, Rome\u2019s National Museum of 21st Century Arts and the Guangzhou Opera House in China, among them \u2014 exemplify her virtuosity in using cutting-edge technologies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/appreciating-zaha-hadid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to design fluid and complex forms<\/a>. As the Pritzker Prize jury said, \u201cIt is not surprising that one of the architects whose work Ms. Hadid admires is another Pritzker Prize winner, the preeminent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architecturaldigest.com\/story\/60-years-ago-modernist-city-brasilia-built\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">South American author of Brasilia<\/a>, and other major works \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/oscar-niemeyer\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oscar Niemeyer<\/a>. This led to what would be a long-term collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/le-corbusier\/\">Le Corbusier<\/a> and his cousin <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/pierre-jeanneret\/\">Pierre Jeanneret<\/a>. Perriand also worked with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/jean-prouve\/\">Jean Prouv\u00e9<\/a> and Paul Nelson. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to these formative experiences in her native country, Perriand\u2019s time in Japan and then Vietnam (from 1940 to 1946) had a crucial impact on her creative vision. She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/charlotte-perriand\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">placed humanity at the center of the design process<\/a>, which she saw as a way of improving society. In the French capital, she learned <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/japanese-lacquer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the art of Japanese lacquer<\/a> under lacquer master Seizo Sugawara and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/eileen-gray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">became a pioneer<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/art-deco\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Art Deco<\/a> and modernism movements. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gray started a workshop to weave the carpets she designed as well as a studio for lacquer and furniture and in 1922 opened a gallery to exhibit and sell her products. At the end of the decade, she <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/eileen-gray\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">began to focus on architecture<\/a>, designing a house for herself and her lover, architect Jean Badovici, who collaborated with her on the project. In 1940, she married jazz musician Billy Grossman and moved to Los Angeles. Upon her arrival in Southern California, she opened the Magnusson-Grossman Studio on Rodeo Drive and rapidly became popular among the Hollywood elite, including Greta Garbo and Gracie Allen. In addition to creating iconic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/greta-magnusson-grossman\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">furniture<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/greta-magnusson-grossman\/furniture\/lighting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lighting<\/a> \u2014 like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/greta-magnusson-grossman-cobra-table-lamp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cobra lamp<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ralph-o-smith\/furniture\/\">Ralph O. The designer moved her studio to Manhattan in 2016 and opened an adjacent showroom in 2017. She makes all her products in New York with the help of local artisans and fabricators. two-story, burned-out former print shop on the Lower East Side and transformed it into a multipurpose workplace. \u201cDesigning, building and opening our showroom and studio in Manhattan really gave people a chance to experience firsthand the types of spaces we can create,\u201d she says. &#8220;Since then, we\u2019ve had so many requests that we\u2019ve been able to take on some really exciting projects, both residential and commercial.&#8221; Interested in the tension between the natural and the man-made, Karlin is currently working on her new collection. \u201cWe\u2019ll show a capsule in Milan taught me how to see and be inspired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently working on a private commission, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/process-tabletop-objects\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">new glassware collections<\/a> and the research and design for an \u201cideal home,\u201d Ferrone will launch a furniture collection to mark the 10th anniversary of her brand next year. \u201cI think there is beauty in the utility of an object, just as there is something remarkable about a piece that is stunning first and practical second \u2014 it\u2019s not an either or,\u201d she says. \u201cI try to give my designs both qualities without insisting that one overshadows the other. I also create pieces that live in the present.
