says Alix Bickson, from the Photographs team at Christie&#8217;s New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Additional works are included by seminal American photographers, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/dorothea-lange\/\">Dorothea Lange<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ilse-bing\/\">Ilse Bing<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/garry-winogrand\/\">Garry Winogrand<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/walker-evans-1903-1975-american\/\">Walker Evans<\/a>, whose photography in the mid-1900s have made extraordinary contributions to the canon of modern art,&#8221; Amongst these Issei artists was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/black-white-photography\/shigemi-uyeda-untitled-lobster-on-plate-c-1925\/id-a_4517742\/\">Shigemi Uyeda<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Following the attack on Pearl Harbor, cameras were declared contraband amongst Japanese Americans, and this groundbreaking photography work was mostly forgotten about and otherwise destroyed. While Uyeda and his family were imprisoned at an internment camp in Arizona, many of Uyeda\u2019s original photographic prints were saved from destruction by being stored in a false ceiling in the artist\u2019s home.
