Asked if they would ever create a simple minimalist piece, the playful designers demur. \u201cYes, maybe,\u201d they say. \u201cWe have no rules. Their meticulously shaped forms left an impression on him, and to this day the young glassmaker is drawn to re-creating them in his work. From his home in Camisano Vicentino, Italy, Crestani crafts exquisitely detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/simone-crestani\/furniture\/?q=bonsai\">glass bonsai sculptures<\/a> using the ancient lampworking technique made famous by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/murano-glass\/\">Murano glassmakers<\/a> in nearby Venice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m an artisan before being an artist,\u201d says Crestani, who first encountered glass working as a boy and apprenticed under Massimo Lunardon. \u201cGlass is my material, and it\u2019s the only medium I can use to express my thoughts,\u201d be it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/dining-entertaining\/glass\/polpo-wine-set-hand-blown-wine-glasses-decanter-simone-crestani\/id-f_19241552\/\">decanter topped with an octopus<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/decorative-objects\/vases-vessels\/bottles\/hand-blown-manhattan-glass-from-alchemica-collection-simone-crestani\/id-f_18252132\/\">manhattan glass<\/a> inspired by a chem lab or a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/decorative-objects\/candle-holders\/candelabras\/handmade-glass-candelabra-rose-candelabra-12-simone-crestani\/id-f_19708352\/\">candelabra<\/a> dotted with pale pink roses. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Countless hours spent in the workshop have taught him to trust his instincts.<strong> <\/strong>\u201cI don\u2019t try to follow [an idea] strictly, but I just use it as a guideline and then I follow the flow,\u201d he says. So it\u2019s only natural that she turns to candy for inspiration as a grown-up. Her playfully misshapen vessels, aptly called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/helle-mardahl\/shop\/furniture\/?q=bon%20bon\">Bon Bons<\/a>, are an \u201cembodiment of dreamy candy colors\u201d in melty glass \u2014 perfect for resting on nightstands or anywhere else a dose of pretty is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo me, colors are a refreshing source of positive energy, and I love being surrounded by colors,\u201d Mardahl says. After hiring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ettore-sottsass\/furniture\/\">Ettore Sottsass<\/a> to design ceramics for his New York imports company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/raymor\/furniture\/\">Raymor<\/a>, he connected the Milanese design polymath to Bitossi\u2019s art director, Aldo Londi, who introduced Sottsass to ceramics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sottsass was hooked, and for years he would travel to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/bitossi-ceramiche-srl\/\">Bitossi<\/a> factory in Florence to visit his good friend Londi. We are the source,\u201d says Gluck. \u201cWe make everything right here in Pennsylvania.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Their vibrant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/decorative-objects\/vases-vessels\/vases\/colorful-set-of-5-decorative-blown-glass-vases-collectible-design-vetro-vero\/id-f_14294041\/\">blown-glass vessels<\/a> \u2014 or flat pitchers, as Gluck likes to calls them \u2014 draw on color theory and the relationship between shapes. While their asymmetry subtly gives them character, it\u2019s the interplay between colors that creates the sense of conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are always looking for refinement, clarity and a form that has both and upward and outward lift,\u201d Gluck says. A mind-bending pairing of industrial cardboard and Carrara marble, the pieces are produced via an arduous and mathematically complex process that begins with making hundreds of cut elements that must fit together precisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A specialized tool is built to fasten the closed cardboard shape with glue.
