But above all, it is <em>the<\/em> arbiter of edgy furniture design in Brooklyn and beyond. At the same time, Singer explains, the stories they write have become less focused on the process of crafting objects and more on &#8220;the personalties making them and the aesthetic universe that all this stuff inhabits \u2014 interiors, galleries, design fairs. Photo by Charlie Schuck<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Who are the women artists who have particularly influenced your work, aesthetic or ethos?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jill Singer: We have never had a mentor per se, but working as women in a traditionally male-dominated business \u2014 and often telling the stories of women in design who were overlooked for decades \u2014 has allowed us to feel a kinship with so many female artists, both living and dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think both of us feel especially inspired by women whom we are close to, and as someone with young children, I feel a particular connection to creative women who are also mothers, like the artist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/bari-ziperstein\/\">Bari Ziperstein<\/a>, of BZIPPY; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sightunseen.com\/2014\/09\/su-wu-writer\/\">Su Wu<\/a>, writer of the blog <em>I\u2019m Revolting<\/em>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/2018\/11\/26\/alexandra-cunningham-cameron-and-yao-fen-you-join-cooper-hewitt-curatorial-staff\/\">Alexandra Cunningham Cameron<\/a>, curator at the Cooper-Hewitt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I would also add to that list <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/faye-toogood\/furniture\/\">Faye Toogood<\/a>, whose career is of particular interest to me because of its relatively porous nature. She\u2019s omnivorous in her interests. She started out in editorial, she\u2019s created some of my favorite furniture pieces, she runs a successful fashion business with her sister, she creates enviable interiors \u2014 all while raising three young children. A Tribute to Pioneering Women Artists<\/a><\/em><strong>. <\/strong>Photo \u00a9 Bauhaus-Archiv, Berlin \/ VG Bild-Kunst<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Monica Khemsurov: I think there are a lot of women who have influenced me in recent years \u2014 including current peers and friends who work in design and make it a point to support other women, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/deeper-than-text\/\">Lora Appleton<\/a> and Matylda Krzykowski \u2014 but when I think of one female icon who I keep coming back to as an inspiration, it\u2019s probably the late German designer and Bauhaus alum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/marianne-brandt\/\">Marianne Brandt<\/a> [1893\u20131983].<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, the main reason is that her work was so incredible, especially her home accessories and ashtrays \u2014 which have a direct connection to the other design business I founded, the smoking accessories brand <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shop-tetra.com\/\">Tetra<\/a>. But she was also a very vocal, and very accomplished, feminist in a time when not many of those existed in the design and art worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"950\" height=\"713\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7849_master-950x713.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-340069\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7849_master-950x713.jpg 950w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7849_master-467x350.jpg 467w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7849_master-120x90.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7849_master-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/IMG_7849_master.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 950px) 100vw, 950px\" \/><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/decorative-objects\/boxes\/decorative-boxes\/very-rare-marianne-brandt-ruppel-box-no-4823\/id-f_7311753\/\">Marianne Brandt for Ruppel Box No. 4823, 1930<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only did she convince the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/bauhaus\/\">Bauhaus<\/a> leaders to let her into the metal workshop at a time when female designers there were actively and purposefully relegated to \u201cwomanly crafts&#8221; like textiles and ceramics, but she was such a badass that she rose to take over from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/laszlo-moholy-nagy\/\">L\u00e1szl\u00f3 Moholy-Nagy<\/a> as its director in 1928, producing one of the most commercially successful designs to ever come out of the school, her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/marianne-brandt\/furniture\/lighting\/table-lamps\/?q=kandem\">Kandem desk lamp<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Post-Bauhaus, she fought her way up the ladder of another metalwares company, and in her later years, she made feminist art. I think her combination of demanding to get the same treatment as men while also making better work than a lot of her male peers is what I find inspiring. I think it\u2019s really powerful to be able to lead by example rather than just preach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>If you could say anything to Brandt today, what would it be?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MK: I would ask her who the women were who inspired her! And if she had any tips for the rest of us about how to get ahead when the odds are against us.
