But also ironic. In the surreal experience that is life during the covid-19 crisis, we chase after toilet paper while high-end goods are ignored. Or are they? What should we make of the luxury market during a pandemic?  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, the secondhand sector was the fastest-growing luxury segment, with revenues rising 12 percent over 2018. In other words, to give just one example, LVMH has for a long time not been the only one to make money from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/buy\/louis-vuitton-speedy\/\">Louis Vuitton Speedy<\/a>; today, the sale of this classic Vuitton design is as likely to benefit a small business or individual reseller who turned a passion for luxury into a profession. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cnew normal\u201d has been especially challenging for these entrepreneurs, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/interior-design-trends\/\">as well as for interior designers<\/a>. But as we&#8217;ve settled into our restructured routines \u2014 hopefully stocked up on toilet paper, face masks and hand sanitizer \u2014 time and curiosity have brought some of us back online looking for objects to brighten our days. As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/chanel\/fashion\/\">Coco Chanel<\/a> pointed out, \u201cLuxury is a necessity that begins where necessity ends.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/chanel\/fashion\/handbags-purses-bags\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"633\" height=\"950\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/STILL-LIFE_0016-633x950.jpg\" alt=\"Punk Chanel handbag\" class=\"wp-image-341358\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/STILL-LIFE_0016-633x950.jpg 633w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/STILL-LIFE_0016-233x350.jpg 233w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/STILL-LIFE_0016-80x120.jpg 80w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/STILL-LIFE_0016-768x1152.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/STILL-LIFE_0016-622x933.jpg 622w, https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/STILL-LIFE_0016.jpg 846w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 633px) 100vw, 633px\" \/><\/a><figcaption>Photo by Alex Lockett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of Chanel, classic items from heritage brands are selling well, especially purses and jewelry. \u201cCustomers,\u201d says Reece Morgan, head of handbags and accessories at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/xupes-limited\/\">Xupes<\/a>, &#8220;are now more open to investing in models that have been more stable investments&#8221; \u2014 that is, handbags and watches by makers like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/rolex\/jewelry\/\">Rolex<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/patek-philippe\/\">Patek Philippe<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/hermes\/\">Herm\u00e8s<\/a> and, yes, Chanel. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Debra Kent, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/mightychic\/\">mightychic<\/a>, has noticed a similar trend: While  smaller-value sales have slowed, purchases requiring bigger investments, like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/hermes-birkin-bag\/\">Herm\u00e8s Birkin bags<\/a>, have remained steady. \u201cShopping for high-end goods,\u201d she believes, gives her customers &#8220;a sense of normalcy and control, like things are kind of normal.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For many, of course, shopping isn\u2019t top of mind. And that might present an opportunity for those seeking specific prizes. \u201cMaybe that Rolex watch or that Herm\u00e8s handbag isn\u2019t the most important thing right now, because you\u2019re concerned about your health or the health of your loved ones,\u201d says John Cormier, founder and CEO of Watchfacts and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/the-collective\/\">The Collective<\/a> (who, in a sign of the times, interrupted our discussion to take his temperature, which turned out to be normal). As a result, he explains, makers have excess product, which will soon trickle down to secondary sellers. \u201cSo you\u2019re  going to see some repricing in the market.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is especially significant for the most sought-after brands and styles, many of whose prices had become unaffordably high. Everything stopped.\u201d But activity returned then, and it wll now. \u201cRemember,\u201d he says, &#8220;people in mainland China and Hong Kong have been locked up for a long time. The power of business won&#8217;t stop, and human innovation won&#8217;t stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s not to say that we will return to where we were. One change may be in the weight given values in purchasing decisions. Recent research by Bain found that \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bain.com\/insights\/luxury-after-coronavirus\/\">ethics will become as important as aesthetics as consumers prioritize purposeful brands<\/a>.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This shift will bolster the preowned market, which is intrinsically sustainable, involving goods that require no new resources to produce. Millennials, in particular, \u201cspend with a conscience for the planet,\u201d says Morgan, noting that members of that generation \u201cstill want to own something special but also know that they can sell it again or exchange it when they choose.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others see the end of \u201cfast\u201d trends, in which purchases are outdated in a fashion minute. \u201cLuxury used to be about longevity,\u201d says Cameron Silver, founder of vintage mecca <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/decades\/\">Decades<\/a>, who predicts that in the  post-pandemic world, consumers will return to the old values, and quality, timelessness and luxury will rise again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-vimeo wp-block-embed-vimeo wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/409976369?dnt=1&amp;app_id=122963\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen; picture-in-picture; clipboard-write\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Here, Roman Sharf of Luxury Bazaar gives  details about the impact of the pandemic on the sales and prices of luxury items.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It can be overwhelming.
