Travertine<\/a> began cropping up on our radar a couple of years ago when designers were jumping on the mixed-marble trend<\/a>. This year, the beige limestone seems ubiquitous, appearing in the jagged slabs of Brazilian architect Otto Felix\u2019s conceptual Sibipirunas House<\/a> for the CASACOR design event in Brazil and in the archways of Kelly Wearstler<\/a>\u2019s buzzy Santa Monica Proper hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A quick search on 1stDibs turns up beautiful contemporary works, from Kueng Caputo’s Half Way to the Universe stool<\/a> to Carta Bianca\u2019s Gilded Cross table<\/a>. And Carlo Scarpa<\/a>\u2019s 1985 Argo dining table<\/a> continues to captivate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At a time when the world is filled with uncertainty, travertine exudes calm and permanence. \u201cThere can be an almost retro association,\u201d says Laura Aviva, creative director of L\u2019Aviva Home<\/a>, noting that the stone (in one of its many comebacks since ancient times) was a 1970s<\/a> mainstay. \u201cBut it can also play out as very sleek and modern. It\u2019s really endlessly versatile, and we adore seeing how different designers use it in a wide range of projects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, we spotlight 14 travertine treasures, old and new, along with thoughts from their makers and sellers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Fratelli Mannelli Table Lamp<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Fratelli<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Very little is known about Fratelli Mannelli<\/a>, a mid-century<\/a> sculptor who clearly liked working with travertine. But the internet abounds with his quirky creations, from card and letter holders shaped like roosters<\/a> to Brutalist bookends<\/a> and penholders<\/a>. This eccentric table lamp<\/a>, made in the 1970s and offered by Fragile<\/a>, would bring a touch of postmodern<\/a> fun to any table or desktop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laun Chord Daybed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Laun<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Los Angeles designers Rachel Bullock<\/a> and Molly Purnell<\/a> usually use metal<\/a> and terrazzo<\/a> for the pieces they create under the name Laun<\/a>. But for the Chord indoor\/outdoor daybed<\/a>, they had something different in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVisually, we were inspired by the monolithic qualities of some of the architecture in Los Angeles,\u201d says Bullock, citing Rafael Moneo\u2019s Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. \u201cIt’s this really beautiful building that seems like it’s suspended next to the 101 freeway downtown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The daybed\u2019s travertine blocks support a thin copper sheet that produces a similar sensation of floating in air. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enzo Mari Bookends<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"\"<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

The works of Italian furniture designer Enzo Mari<\/a>, for whom the impulse to create was as natural as hunger, embody both Arts and Crafts<\/a> influences and his communist political views, along with a humble, DIY spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This desk accessory<\/a>, released in the 1960s<\/a> by Danese Milano<\/a> and available through WYETH<\/a>, is multifunctional as well as elegant, suitable for holding books, storing writing utensils and separating and sorting letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Fort Standard Planar Side Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Fort<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy love of travertine began when I visited the Mies van der Rohe<\/a> Barcelona Pavilion while studying abroad in 2007,\u201d says Fort Standard<\/a> founder Greg Buntain. \u201cUnfilled travertine is used throughout the space, in partitions, walls, floors and benches<\/a>, which made for a lasting impression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, a decade later and many miles away, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Buntain crafted the Planar side table<\/a> from pieces of travertine that slot together like those of a Tetris puzzle. Launched in 2018, the piece remains one of his favorite creations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Addition Studio Exhale the Void Table Lamp<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Addition<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Australian designer Ryan Hanrahan isn\u2019t shy about his fondness for travertine. Having worked with the stone for five years, he\u2019s found it \u201cblends well with most situations\u201d and has a knockout \u201ccrater-like texture.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It’s not harsh like a black marble or boring like a white marble,\u201d says Hanrahan, who used the material, sourced from China, for his adjustable Exhale the Void table light<\/a>. The resulting piece, offered by Sight Unseen<\/a>, is a stunner \u2014 or, as he puts it, \u201cfunctional art.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Kueng Caputo Half Way to the Universe Stool<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Kueng<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Kueng Caputo<\/a> has a knack for making natural materials feel otherworldly. Case in point: the Swiss duo’s Half Way to the Universe stool<\/a>, composed of two contrasting hunks of travertine \u2014 one lacquered and polished, the other hand-cut and porous. Designed to function as a chair, side table or sculpture and available through Etage Projects<\/a>, the piece celebrates the beauty of imperfection while winking at Memphis Milano<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stillmade Tripod Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Stillmade<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Achieving true beauty takes work. And that\u2019s as true for travertine as for other fine design materials. It\u2019s a challenge to find high-quality slabs with just the right hue and veining. Just ask Paul Mignogna. For Stillmade\u2019s Tripod table<\/a>, the New York designer settled on Italian Navona stone because of its \u201cwarm, light color\u201d and intricate patterns. Paired with a trio of sculptural cuts of American white oak, it makes for a modern classic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

ASH NYC Marbicle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The seeds for the Marbicle<\/a> were planted in 2015, when ASH NYC<\/a> chief creative officer Will Cooper was spending time in Mexico City. \u201cSir David Chipperfield erected a massive museum there for the Jumex collection out of travertine,\u201d recalls Cooper, who was particularly struck by Martin Creed’s site-specific striped stone floor<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That memory came back to him when he was working on furniture for a client\u2019s home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. And thus was born the mixed-marble<\/a> Marbicle \u2014 \u201ctwo dressers that sit inside the antique dressers that flank the master bed,\u201d as Cooper describes his creation. \u201cThe beauty is you can flip them around multiple times and always have a surface to look at. They are perfect as nightstands and equally great as side tables for your living room or library.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coffee Table Attributed to Jean-Charles Moreux<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Coffee<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Travertine shows Gallic \u00e9lan in this coffee table<\/a> attributed to Jean-Charles Moreux<\/a>. The French architect and designer, who had a passion for gardens, was equally enchanted by baroque<\/a>, classical and rococo<\/a> styles. The 1940s piece, offered by Newel<\/a>, stands out for its scroll-headed tapering legs, a poetic flourish that Colette, one of Moreux\u2019s celebrity clients, would have appreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vaust Berlin Untitled I<\/em><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

David Kosock likes to think of his Berlin Untitled I<\/em><\/a> as a memento of sorts. \u201cEach of the pieces reflects another facet of this city,\u201d says the Vaust<\/a> studio designer, referring to the sculpture’s alternating discs of Gauinger Travertin (sourced from the southwest German state of Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg), hand-carved leather, acrylic, oak and brass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those materials serve as metaphors for his experiences in Berlin, \u201cfrom intensive nights in various clubs, to art museums, to days spent strolling around the city for understanding its history in architecture.\u201d The piece would be equally evocative standing on a plinth or sideboard<\/a> or next to a lounge chair<\/a> or modernist sofa<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carlo Scarpa Argo Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Carlo Scarpa<\/a> was known for breathing life into ancient public buildings. But the 20th-century Italian architect also designed objects and furniture handcrafted from wood, stone, stucco and glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Argo travertine table, 1985<\/a>, sold by Morentz,<\/a> is based on a series of designs Scarpa produced in the late 1960s for Simon Gavina Editions<\/a> and riffs on his wider Samo<\/a> table. With its base composed of stylized classical pillars, it would make a subtly luxurious statement in a dining room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

L\u2019Aviva Home Piedra Lights<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"L\u2019Aviva<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Stone, including travertine, is the star of L\u2019Aviva Home<\/a>‘s Piedra collection of hand-carved sconces<\/a> and flush mounts<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s a streamlined design that is all about letting the stone, and the uniqueness of each cut block of stone, really shine,\u201d says founder Laura Aviva<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The line has an archeological origin story. \u201cWhen we learned that the stone for the masks of Teotihuac\u00e1n is believed to have been quarried from the place being mined today by the artisans in the town in Puebla, it all gelled,\u201d she says. The pieces \u2014 each unique, thanks to the material’s variable coloration \u2014 have been a hit with designers working on homes in Palm Springs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Toucan Statue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Colorful<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Made in the Philippines some time in the 1960s, this colorful mixed-stone toucan<\/a>, available from Horseman Antiques<\/a>, will enliven any space. How would we style it? In the center of a mantel<\/a> with a gilded clock<\/a>, as Bryan O\u2019Sullivan<\/a> did in a recently restored salon in Paris<\/a>, or nestled among a stack of books<\/a> in a wood-paneled library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Alex P. <\/strong>White Side Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
\"Alex<\/figure>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEven though it is fabricated from several pieces of travertine, I wanted a thicker, almost monolithic appearance, as if it were carved from one block of stone,\u201d says New York and Los Angeles designer Alex P. White<\/a>, describing his side table. \u201cI wanted the most raw, porous-looking material I could find, like it was just pulled out of the earth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That raw material has been precision cut into clean, geometric shapes, fitted together in a sculptural piece that is a true work of art \u2014 and just the right spot for a quarantine cocktail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
