This year, the beige limestone seems ubiquitous, appearing in the jagged slabs of Brazilian architect Otto Felix\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yellowtrace.com.au\/sibipirunas-concept-house-brazil-studio-otto-felix-temporary-architecture\/\">conceptual Sibipirunas House<\/a> for the CASACOR design event in Brazil and in the archways of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/design-firms\/kelly-wearstler\/\">Kelly Wearstler<\/a>\u2019s buzzy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/kelly-wearstler-synchronicity\/\">Santa Monica Proper hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A quick search on 1stDibs turns up beautiful contemporary works, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/stools\/half-way-to-universe-stool\/id-f_4185423\/\">Kueng Caputo&#8217;s Half Way to the Universe stool<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/coffee-tables-cocktail-tables\/gilded-cross-table-carta-bianca-iranian-travertine-top-gold-leaf-italy\/id-f_7783403\/\">Carta Bianca\u2019s Gilded Cross table<\/a>. And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/carlo-scarpa\/furniture\/\">Carlo Scarpa<\/a>\u2019s 1985 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/dining-room-tables\/carlo-scarpa-argo-travertine-table\/id-f_16522802\/\">Argo dining table<\/a> continues to captivate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At a time when the world is filled with uncertainty, travertine exudes calm and permanence. \u201cThere can be an almost retro association,\u201d says Laura Aviva, creative director of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/laviva-home\/\">L\u2019Aviva Home<\/a>, noting that the stone (in one of its many comebacks since ancient times) was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/material\/travertine\/?per=1970s\">1970s<\/a> mainstay. \u201cBut it can also play out as very sleek and modern. But the internet abounds with his quirky creations, from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/decorative-objects\/sculptures\/animal-sculptures\/travertine-animal-sculpture-card-letter-holder-fratelli-mannelli-1970s\/id-f_17895831\/\">card and letter holders shaped like roosters<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/more-furniture-collectibles\/home-accents\/bookends\/fratelli-mannelli-travertine-bookends\/id-f_17857971\/\">Brutalist bookends<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/decorative-objects\/desk-accessories\/more-desk-accessories\/travertine-marble-letter-pen-holder-fratelli-mannelli-rapolano-italy-1970s\/id-f_17413692\/\">penholders<\/a>. But for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/day-beds\/chord-contemporary-indoor-outdoor-travertine-copper-daybed-laun\/id-f_15552371\/\">Chord indoor\/outdoor daybed<\/a>, they had something different in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cVisually, we were inspired by the monolithic qualities of some of the architecture in Los Angeles,\u201d says Bullock, citing Rafael Moneo\u2019s Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. \u201cIt&#8217;s this really beautiful building that seems like it&#8217;s suspended next to the 101 freeway downtown.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The daybed\u2019s travertine blocks support a thin copper sheet that produces a similar sensation of floating in air. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 designer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/enzo-mari\/furniture\/\">Enzo Mari<\/a>, for whom the impulse to create was as natural as hunger, embody both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/arts-and-crafts\/\">Arts and Crafts<\/a> influences and his communist political views, along with a humble, DIY spirit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/decorative-objects\/desk-accessories\/more-desk-accessories\/1960s-italian-desk-accessories-enzo-mari-danese-milano\/id-f_16334112\/\">desk accessory<\/a>, released in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/period\/1960s\/\">1960s<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/danese\/furniture\/\">Danese Milano<\/a> and available through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/wyeth\/shop\/\">WYETH<\/a>, is multifunctional as well as elegant, suitable for holding books, storing writing utensils and separating and sorting href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/ludwig-mies-van-der-rohe\/furniture\/\">Mies van der Rohe<\/a> Barcelona Pavilion while studying abroad in 2007,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/fort-standard\/furniture\/\">Fort Standard<\/a> founder Greg Buntain. \u201cUnfilled travertine is used throughout the space, in partitions, walls, floors and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/benches\/material\/travertine\/\">benches<\/a>, which made for a lasting impression.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Indeed, a decade later and many miles away, in Red Hook, Brooklyn, Buntain crafted the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/tables\/side-tables\/contemporary-planar-side-table-travertine-stone-fort-standard\/id-f_10533893\/\">Planar side table<\/a> from pieces of travertine that slot together like those of a Tetris puzzle. Having worked with the stone for five years, he\u2019s found it \u201cblends well with most situations\u201d and has a knockout \u201ccrater-like texture.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not harsh like a black marble or boring like a white marble,\u201d says Hanrahan, who used the material, sourced from China, for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/lighting\/table-lamps\/adjustable-travertine-table-lamp-addition-studios-semicircle\/id-f_12403191\/\">adjustable Exhale the Void table light<\/a>. Case in point: the Swiss duo&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/seating\/stools\/half-way-to-universe-stool\/id-f_4185423\/\">Half Way to the Universe stool<\/a>, composed of two contrasting hunks of travertine \u2014 one lacquered and polished, the other hand-cut and porous.
