Perhaps it was destiny. After all, when two icons of chic dream up the perfect handbag<\/a>, we shouldn\u2019t be surprised that the result is another icon<\/a>. Such was the case when Herm\u00e8s<\/a> chief executive Jean-Louis Dumas and the actress and chanteuse Jane Birkin<\/a> met on that legendary 1981 flight and together conceived her namesake bag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Herm\u00e8s Birkin bag<\/a> has become an icon, no doubt about it. But it has also become something more surprising: a better investment than a painting by an Impressionist<\/a> master. How did that happen?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the Birkin first became available, in 1984, the cost of a basic model was approximately $2,000, and it has since increased 500 percent<\/a>. Truth is, however, it\u2019s a stretch to call any Birkin \u201cbasic.” Each is handmade by a single expert craftsperson. Price varies with size, hardware, color and type of leather<\/a>. A limited assortment of leathers and colors<\/a> is released each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The rarity of certain materials and hues is reflected in resale pricing: In 2019, \u201cVegas Dave\u201d Oancea paid a record-breaking $500,000 for a 35cm Niloticus crocodile Himalaya<\/a> with 18-carat white-gold and diamond hardware. The skin is the rarest of the rare<\/a>. The lock alone was worth $80,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Birkin\u2019s value has consistently risen and never fluctuated downward,\u201d says Reece Morgan, head of handbags and accessories for Xupes<\/a>, citing the fact that \u201cproduction has been highly limited to maintain its unattainable aura<\/a>.\u201d In fact, he adds, Herm\u00e8s has been \u201cscaling back production each year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019ve had a lot of men buy their first bag from me,\u201d says Debra Kent, of mightychic<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019ve always told them that after this bag, there\u2019s no turning back. The next step is you\u2019re going to walk into a room with your wife or your girlfriend, and she\u2019s going to be carrying the bag. Every woman in that room is going to want you and every man in the room is going to hate you.\u201d In short, says Kirk, the Birkin \u201cis the ultimate status symbol.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That wasn\u2019t always so. The Birkin began to arouse mass consciousness (and desire) in the late 1990s<\/a>, with the advent of the \u201cIt bag.\u201d And nothing was the same after it made its prime-time debut on Sex in the City<\/em>, in 2002. \u201cOh, honey, it\u2019s not so much the style,\u201d Samantha cooed to Carrie as they ogled a Birkin in the window of Herm\u00e8s, \u201cit\u2019s what carrying it means.\u201d Approximately 5.9 million viewers watched that week; it\u2019s possible to imagine \u201cBIRKIN!\u201d suddenly scribbled on nearly as many wish lists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a storied product,\u201d says Milton Pedraza, CEO of the Luxury Institute. \u201cThat\u2019s what makes it a great investment.\u201d Pedraza considers Herm\u00e8s \u201cthe pinnacle of luxury\u201d and credits the house with excellent stewardship of the design. \u201cIt\u2019s a classic case study in how to manage luxury \u2014 be meticulous in what you create, and manage the supply. The market will react on its own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the reaction to the Herm\u00e8s bag has been quite enthusiastic. A study of luxury investments in 2019<\/a> found that handbags<\/a> had the highest returns \u2014 and the Birkin had the highest of the high. Birkin prices increased 13 percent over the course of the year; art<\/a>, meanwhile, rose 5 percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Indeed, on a recent list<\/a> of the 10 most expensive handbags<\/a>, seven are Birkins, including an Exceptional Collection Shiny Rouge H Porosus Crocodile Birkin<\/a> and a fuchsia Porosus crocodile diamond-studded Birkin<\/a>, which sold at auction, respectively, for $203,150 and $222,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Contemplating an investment in a Birkin? Consider color: New and seasonal ones are often in great demand; some recent hues include Rouge De Coeur<\/a> (2019), Blue Azure (2018) and Toffee (2017). And look for rare materials \u2014 exotics such as lizard<\/a>, ostrich<\/a> and Porosus and Niloticus crocodile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But a Birkin has more going for it than its good looks. The brand itself helps to sustain sales, even through difficult times. \u201cHerm\u00e8s has a wonderful history of good purpose and good values,\u201d says Pedraza, adding that the brand \u201cwill be valued even more after the pandemic. Herm\u00e8s will definitely be one of those that will stand tall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t
