Through the ages, they have taken a number of forms, including veils, masks, scarves and bandanas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have enlisted these accessories for protection, to signal modesty, facilitate flirtation, enable licentiousness or simply to look cool. In many cultures, it is women who wear them, but in certain societies, such as the Tuareg of northern Africa, men do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some veils have religious significance and are associated with propriety and modesty; others serve as protection against the elements or to shield the wearer from dust. And some draw attention to the face by partially concealing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the U.S., hats with veils were fashionable in both the 1890s and the 1930s. And she was fascinated by veils, featuring them in the pages of the magazine and, after she became a special consultant to the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum in New York City, draping them over the heads of mannequins in exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At <em>Vogue<\/em>, Vreeland collaborated with several iconic photographers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/irving-penn\/art\/\">Irving Penn<\/a>, for example, shot the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/color-photography\/irving-penn-woman-sunblock-new-york\/id-a_3430873\/\">image of a partially obscured face<\/a> above to accompany a 1966 article titled &#8220;Beauty and Science Fiction Fact.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Vreeland collaborator, the German-born photographer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/horst-p-horst\/art\/\">Horst P. Horst<\/a> is probably best known for his (unveiled) portrait of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/black-white-photography\/horst-p-horst-classics-marlene-dietrich-1942-ii-small\/id-a_5269002\/\">Marlene Dietrich<\/a> and the fashion classic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/black-white-photography\/horst-p-horst-classics-mainbocher-corset-1939-small-archival-pigment-print\/id-a_3369623\/\"><em>Mainbocher Corset<\/em><\/a> (1939). Before working for <em>Vogue<\/em>, however, Horst, who had ties to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/style\/surrealist\/\">Surrealist art movement<\/a>, shot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/photography\/black-white-photography\/horst-p-horst-classics-electric-beauty-1939-small-archival-pigment-print\/id-a_5258272\/\"><em>Electric Beauty<\/em><\/a> (1939) in Paris with the masked model Blanche Grady.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/erwin-blumenfeld\/art\/\">Erwin Blumenfeld<\/a>, also a German-born fashion photographer with a Surrealist bent, shot for <em>Harper&#8217;s Bazaar<\/em> and <em>Life<\/em> and for both the French and American versions of <em>Vogue<\/em>. They spread throughout Europe, arriving on the British Isles in the 18th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By wearing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/folk-art\/masks\/\">masks<\/a>, partygoers could conceal their identities and thus freely engage in taboo activities, like gambling and sexual liaisons. There are also many ways to wear them: around the neck, on the head \u2014 and (a traditional styling for a <em>shemagh<\/em>) over the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want your face covering to complement your outfit, emulate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/fashion\/clothing\/suits-outfits-ensembles\/amazing-vintage-diane-freis-silk-chiffon-beaded-pink-jumpsuit-head-scarf-sash\/id-v_3690103\/\">1970s style of assembling ensembles that include matching headscarves<\/a>.
