At 11 by 4 feet, it\u2019s huge, but just right for the expansive kitchen. And, says Roberts, \u201cthe rustic wood top saves it from being too imposing.&#8221; The light fixture from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/john-salibello-antiques-ny\/\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Salibello Antiques<\/a> provides a funky note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/brooklyn-brownstone-16a-950x631.jpg\" alt=\"Brooklyn Heights townhouse by 1100 Architect\" class=\"wp-image-347976\"\/><figcaption>Photo by Peter Aaron<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You wouldn\u2019t know it to look at it, but this kitchen area belongs to a mid-19th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/brooklyn-brownstone-brooklyn-ny\/157532\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Brooklyn Heights brownstone<\/a>. &#8220;Previously, the rear wall of this historic building had been mostly solid, creating darkened interiors,&#8221; says 1100 Architect principal designer Juergen Riehm. &#8220;The new extension does the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Using floor-to-ceiling glass walls and sliding panel windows,\u201d he explains, &#8220;we created a direct connection to the garden both visually and spatially.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In renovating the home, Riehm was careful to keep a connection with its past. &#8220;Maintaining that sense of history was an important priority for the project,\u201d he says, &#8220;so our design keeps many of the building\u2019s historic features.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here, Riehm balanced the kitchen\u2019s contemporary look with mid-century modern furnishings, like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/designs\/eero-saarinen-pedestal-table\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Eero Saarinen Pedestal table<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/arne-jacobsen\/furniture\/\">Arne <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/arne-jacobsen\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jacobsen<\/a> chairs and  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/rodolfo-dordoni\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rodolfo Dordoni<\/a> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/artemide\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Artemide<\/a> pendant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"348077\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/Jesse_Parris-Lamb_Bkln_Showhouse_12copy-633x950.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-348077\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"348078\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/JPL_AFTER-633x950.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-348078\"\/><\/figure>\n<figcaption class=\"blocks-gallery-caption\">Photos by Kirsten Francis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Our inspiration for the kitchen came directly from the historic envelope of the house,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/brooklyn-heights-kitchen-brooklyn-ny\/174932\/\">Amanda <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/brooklyn-heights-kitchen-brooklyn-ny\/174932\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jesse<\/a>, from the firm Jesse Parris-Lamb, says of this space for last year&#8217;s Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse. Although the building is at least one hundred years old, most of the furnishings are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/mid-century-modern\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mid-century<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/style\/mid-century-modern\/\"> modern<\/a>. Case in point: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/osvaldo-borsani\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Osvaldo Borsani<\/a> dining table, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/nanna-ditzel\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Nanna Ditzel<\/a> highchair and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/hans-agne-jakobsson\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hans-Agne Jakobsson<\/a> pendant in the breakfast nook. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the cooking area, the appliances, of course, are brand-new. But there are modernist touches like the painted stripes on the floor, influenced by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/anni-albers-1899-1994-german\/\">Anni Albers<\/a>&#8216;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/furniture\/rugs-carpets\/north-and-south-american\/study-rug-anni-albers\/id-f_20593822\/\">familiar design<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019_10_17JG0031X-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Josh Greene-designed kitchen in Dumbo\" class=\"wp-image-347973\"\/><figcaption>Photo by Joshua McHugh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the Dumbo kitchen of Viennese transplants, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/brooklyn-brooklyn-ny\/162292\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Josh Greene<\/a> looked to Austrian design as his main source of inspiration. &#8220;We used pattern sparingly,\u201d says Greene, &#8220;mostly geometrics harking back to turn-of-the-century Vienna and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/wiener-werkstatte\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wiener<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/wiener-werkstatte\/furniture\/\"> Werkst\u00e4tte<\/a>.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps the most obvious nod to the clients\u2019 native country are the breakfast table chairs by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/creators\/josef-hoffmann\/furniture\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Josef Hoffmann<\/a>, a founder of the Wiener Werkst\u00e4tte design movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/14.DumboLoftbyChangoCo.-KitchenWide-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Dumbo kitchen by Chango &amp; Co.\" class=\"wp-image-347982\"\/><figcaption>Photo by Sarah Elliott<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In designing this space in a Dumbo loft, says Susana Simonpietri, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photo\/dumbo-loft-by-chango-co-transitional-kitchen-brooklyn-ny\/4401172\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chango &amp; Co<\/a>&#8216;s creative director and owner, \u201cour inspiration was the family&#8217;s vision of a brighter, more inviting kitchen.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With that in mind, the team kept the palette neutral but airy. &#8220;It\u2019s the main focal point,\u201d explains Simonpietri, &#8220;so we replaced dark, industrial finishes with light oak cabinetry and bright white marble countertops.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/jam-architecture-140-brooklyn-art-deco-duplex-kitchenette-950x927.jpg\" alt=\"Downtown kitchen by JAM Architecture\" class=\"wp-image-347987\"\/><figcaption>Photo by Gieves Anderson<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The apartment is in a landmarked <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/collections\/art-deco\/\">Art Deco<\/a> building, so the clients felt strongly that we should take the design in a direction that honored that past,&#8221; FIG Interior Design&#8217;s Nina Garbiras says of a Downtown Brooklyn duplex on which she collaborated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/photo\/kitchen-art-deco-modern-kitchen-brooklyn-ny\/4893042\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">JAM Architecture<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The kitchen area, part of an expansive living space, pays homage to the era\u2019s glamorous style with its curved edges and warm hues. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/dealers\/gabriel-scott\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gabriel Scott<\/a>&#8216;s smokey wall light provides the perfect finishing touch.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/wp-content\/uploads\/232CarltonAvenue-172-950x633.jpg\" alt=\"Fort Greene kitchen by Jae Joo Designs\" class=\"wp-image-347979\"\/><figcaption>Photo by Nick Glimenakis<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I wanted to create a kitchen that feels classic but is functional, with a plenty of storage,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/project\/brooklyn-brownstone-brooklyn-ny\/190322\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jae Joo<\/a> says of this space in a Fort Greene home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Joo, that meant concealing as many appliances as possible.
