In stark contrast to traditional artistic practice, it drew on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/pop-art-style-assouline-julie-belcove\/\">imagery from popular culture<\/a> \u2014 comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media \u2014 to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/paintings\/style\/pop-art\/\">paintings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/sculptures\/style\/pop-art\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sculptures<\/a> that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below, we present a introduction to Pop art, describing its characteristics and how it came to be, as well as some of its most influential practitioners and their work.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"callout\">\n<h2>What Is Pop Art?<\/h2>\n<p>Pop art started in Britain in the 1950s as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period&#8217;s consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Richard Hamilton\u2019s 1956 collage <em>Just what is it that makes today\u2019s homes so different, so appealing?<\/em> is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"pop-art-characteristics-and-themes\"><strong>Pop Art Characteristics and Themes<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Pop art works are distinguished by their bold imagery, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/blogs\/the-study\/famous-colorful-paintings\/\">bright colors<\/a> and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners sought to challenge the status quo, breaking with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/art\/style\/abstract-expressionist\/\">Abstract Expressionism<\/a> and making statements about current events. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other key characteristics of Pop art include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Appropriation of imagery and techniques from popular and commercial culture<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use of different media and formats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Repetition in imagery and iconography<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Incorporation of mundane objects from advertisements, cartoons and other popular media<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hard edges<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ironic and witty treatment of subject matter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"influential-pop-art-artists\">Influential Pop Art Artists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with Andy Warhol, whose clever appropriation of motifs and images helped to transform the artistic style into a lifestyle. Much like Warhol, Lichtenstein drew his subjects from print media, particularly comic strips, producing paintings and sculptures characterized by primary colors, bold outlines and halftone dots, elements appropriated from commercial printing. In the early 1960s, he began creating avant-garde and highly commercial works rife with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.1stdibs.com\/introspective-magazine\/collecting-andy-warhol\/\">celebrity portraits, image repetition and advertising iconography<\/a>, all key features of the style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in the \u201960s, Warhol launched the Factory, a gathering place for fellow artists as well as the era\u2019s celebrities, writers and drag queens. Born in Sweden, Oldenburg moved with his wife and artistic collaborator, Coosje van Bruggen, to New York in 1956.
