Set within architect Rene Gonzalez<\/a>\u2019s celebrated Louver House<\/a>, an enclosed patio bedecked in calming neutrals by Studio Santos serves as a personal escape for a young executive. Thanks to the building\u2019s innovative horizontal louvers, the outdoor spaces feel temperate year-round, even in muggy Miami.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn person, that terrace really is a dream,\u201d says Gregory Santos, the studio\u2019s principal and namesake. \u201cThe way the breeze moves through and the light shifts during the day makes it such a special spot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At its heart is a Restoration Hardware<\/a> Havana daybed, layered with pillows for afternoon siestas. A custom pink side table playfully nods to Miami Beach\u2019s rosy sidewalks, while ceramic vessels add artisanal accents. Plantings of local species \u2014 clusias, sea grapes \u2014 line the balcony like living architecture, while a fig tree stands sentry by the daybed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis isn\u2019t just a terrace,\u201d Santos says. \u201cIt\u2019s a threshold between indoors and out. The louvers choreograph light and shadow, while the sliding doors dissolve the boundary, turning the garden into a living room and the living room into a garden.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a villa nestled in the Western Oregon countryside<\/a>, Light and Dwell<\/a> CEO and founder Aymee Kuhlman aimed to \u201ccreate a seamless indoor-outdoor sanctuary that celebrates the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A walnut tripod stool<\/a>, repurposed as a drinks table, and paired Danish modern teak rocking chairs<\/a> compose the poolside seating area, providing the perfect perch from which to take in the view. And the mix of warm woods fits right in with the bucolic scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe wanted a space that felt both sophisticated and serene,\u201d Kuhlman says, \u201cwhere the infinity pool becomes a mirror reflecting the mature trees and golden fields beyond.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Design firm IDGroup<\/a> undertook a remodel and expansion that preserved the hand-troweled stucco<\/a> walls, clay-tile<\/a> roof and wrought-iron<\/a> railings while introducing several outdoor living areas to complement the house\u2019s historic charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis outdoor lounge opens directly to a covered dining room with seating for 14 on one side and to the pool<\/a> and raised sundeck<\/a> on the other,\u201d says Ferial Sadeghian, IDGroup\u2019s CEO and cohead, with Jeff Vance. \u201cLush landscaping softens the stone architecture, blurring boundaries and harmonizing the spaces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This nook, outfitted with earth-toned cushions<\/a>, wooden stools<\/a> and circular tables<\/a> reminiscent of volcanic rock, serves as a \u201ccasual social hub,\u201d she adds. \u201cThe outdoor kitchen behind the stone benches<\/a> allows the person cooking or grilling to be a part of the gathering and converse with the guests sitting in the lounge area.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a house in a California beach community<\/a>, Kenneth Brown<\/a> fashioned a third-floor sundeck that balances earthy textures with easygoing elegance. \u201cThe terracotta-tile flooring<\/a> flows from the den,” the designer says. “The use of natural materials like stone, wood, clay and iron connects the outdoor space to the interior palette, creating a timeless, grounded design.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brown Jordan<\/a> Venetian lounge chairs and ottomans upholstered in indigo-flecked HOLLY HUNT<\/a> fabric provide a central gathering point in front of a Formations<\/a> fireplace flanked by custom benches. Oval side tables<\/a> rest between the chairs, their waxed finish melding with the space\u2019s overall weathered character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy design goal was to create a relaxed retreat,\u201d Brown says, \u201cfor the family to connect with each other and enjoy the views.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located on a Louisiana peninsula where two bayous converge, this raised house<\/a>, inspired by historic plantation architecture, was designed by Lee Ledbetter<\/a> to showcase the water views in several directions. The best place to take in the vistas? The lengthy covered porch, or gallery, behind the home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis informal rear gallery and its projecting roof overhang are intentionally deep to allow for ample seating while protecting porch sitters from Louisiana\u2019s heavy rains,\u201d says Ledbetter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The seating area reflects the home\u2019s balance of comfort and tradition. A vintage McGuire<\/a> rattan sofa and armchairs mingle with custom-made mahogany planter\u2019s chairs<\/a>, all layered with soft cushions. Zinc tables<\/a> punctuate the organic arrangement with metallic smoothness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taken as a whole, Ledbetter says, \u201cthe gallery is an informal family retreat wrapping the back of a rather formal home.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside Amsterdam, Marmol Radziner<\/a> created a modern villa<\/a> for a young family that provides privacy from the street but is open at the back, where glass and steel frame expansive views of the garden and canal. The interiors, by Floris Koch, of the Loft, emphasize warmth and texture, qualities that carry through to the covered patio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe outdoor lounge was envisioned as a seamless extension of the living room,\u201d says Stephanie Hobbs, design principal at Marmol Radziner. \u201cAnchored by the same dark-brick fireplace, which appears to float independently of surrounding walls, the space maintains continuity with the home’s interior.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furnishings include a pair of Cargo leather armchairs and a Nimbus coffee table, crafted from a thin slice of oak on a slender metal frame, all made by Heerenhuis<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Working in tandem with the fireplace and the slatted overhang, these pieces form an intimate nook where the family can stay warm and dry in a Netherlandish climate that’s anything but for much of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ensconced in Beverly Hills\u2019 fabled Trousdale Estates<\/a> \u2014 a neighborhood known for its mid-century architectural pizzazz \u2014 this family house<\/a> epitomizes Hollywood Regency glamour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Designer Clint Nicholas<\/a> embraced that legacy by shaping a circular courtyard into a series of outdoor rooms that echo the architecture\u2019s theatricality. \u201cThis John Elgin Woolf<\/a>\u2013designed home already had such a strong architectural presence that I wanted the outdoor spaces to feel like a serene extension of it,\u201d Nicholas says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In and around the cloistered loop are seating areas for dining, chatting and relaxing, converging at a fireplace against the house\u2019s rear wall. The spaces are furnished with David Sutherland<\/a> pieces underneath Santa Barbara umbrellas, providing comfort and shade in this modern-meets-classical stage set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI envisioned it as a beautiful hotel courtyard \u2014 multiple seating areas for dining and lounging,\u201d Nicholas explains, \u201ca place that feels both peaceful and inviting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Built into a forested slope in Bridgehampton, New York, a 1972 Eugene Futterman\u2013designed house<\/a> was remade by Timothy Godbold<\/a> as a sleek bachelor pad with cinematic flair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Channeling the lairs from the James Bond<\/a> films he admired growing up, Godbold leaned into stainless-steel finishes, unexpected shapes and dramatic design gestures. A Mayan-ziggurat-style fireplace anchors the living room, while a hanging garden nods to Paul Rudolph<\/a>\u2019s angled forms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe design vision aimed to achieve harmony with the existing house, which is characterized by geometric principles and right angles,\u201d Godbold says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That vision extends outdoors to the bifurcated patio. \u201cThe focal point of the fire-pit area is the RIO table<\/a> by Charlotte Perriand<\/a>, inspired by a logo from an iconic ’80s album,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Curved Paola Lenti<\/a> chairs and a Stark rug<\/a> closer to the house bring layered comforts, while also underlining what Godbold describes as the patio\u2019s \u201csophistication, modernity and luxury.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On one of Nantucket\u2019s most coveted harbor-front sites, Workshop\/APD<\/a> designed a shingle-style compound<\/a> of interconnected buildings that balances privacy with wide-open views of the water. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The guest quarters and main house are linked by layered terraces that form multiple fresh-air lounge zones, including one with a pair of two-person basket swings next to an outdoor fireplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lumber used throughout is left natural rather than painted, allowing it to gray gracefully. \u201cWe don\u2019t use color for color\u2019s sake,\u201d says firm cofounder Andrew Kotchen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His partner, Matthew Berman, adds, \u201cAny lifestyle that\u2019s edited is going to feel better than a lifestyle that\u2019s cluttered.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resulting aesthetic \u2014 what the duo call \u201ccrafted modern\u201d \u2014 defines the compound\u2019s contemporary character, where every element is useful, durable and crisp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jayne Design Studio<\/a> was tasked with refreshing Balderbrae, an early-20th-century house in Suffern<\/a>, New York, once owned by interior designer David Easton.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

William Cullum, senior designer at Jayne, outfitted one of the property\u2019s two loggias in serene shades \u2014 especially on the walls, where artist and decorative painter Chuck Hettinger created a series of stripes in varying widths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe stripes not only added interest but in a way camouflaged the walls by complementing the landscape,\u201d Cullum says, \u201cwhereas a solid color would have contrasted.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The traditional wicker seating<\/a> is accompanied by a contemporary coffee table made of steel with a concrete top. The pair of custom garden stools were personalized for the clients by Venezuelan-born artist Reinaldo Sanguino. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Wilmington, North Carolina, Barrie Benson<\/a> kept things simple when it came to the deck of an oceanfront home<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis porch looks out toward the beach,\u201d she explains. “We wanted the furnishings to recede so it was all about the view.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The classic wicker and teak<\/a> furniture certainly blends in with the setting. \u201cWhat better place to enjoy a sunset cocktail or a catnap after a day in the sun?\u201d Benson asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To make his vision a reality, Lee selected a custom sectional banquette and an antique teakwood bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To achieve that gracious ease, Fong chose wicker seating and a vintage coffee table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the patio, the firm sought to create a comfortable open-air living room centered on the fireplace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe used a mix of furnishings and styles that would feel at home with the Spanish-Moorish architecture,\u201d Steven Johanknecht, Commune\u2019s cofounder and partner, says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among those pieces are hand-woven rope sofas from David Sutherland<\/a>, teak lounge chairs, a Jacques Adnet<\/a> coffee table and a petrified-wood side table from JF Chen<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She embraced the architecture’s Moorish influence with a pool that she describes as a Moroccan-inspired fountain, though she nodded to the local landscape with a vintage limestone table and urns in the same material. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adler filled the brick patio with a mix of seating from makers like Sika Design<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her aim with the unexpected space was to celebrate the natural landscape, which she did by bringing in materials like rattan, teak and even a petrified tree trunk, used as a coffee table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“One of my favorite decoration items on this terrace is the custom mosaic coffee table that I designed with Sicis,\u201d he says. “It has amazing style and is perfect for outdoor environments.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n
