American artist Jacob Lawrence<\/a> (1917\u20132000) \u2014 best known for \u201cThe Migration Series,\u201d<\/a> a collection of paintings depicting the mass movement of African Americans from the southern U.S. to the northern states in the early 20th century \u2014 created this image<\/a>, titled Five Black Athletes in a Relay Race<\/em>, for the 1972 Summer Games. The poster was printed after Lawrence\u2019s 1971 gouache study<\/a>, now in the permanent collection of the Seattle Art Museum. This serigraph is from a limited edition of 200 hand signed by the artist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Misha the bear<\/a>, the official mascot<\/a> of the 1980 Moscow Summer Olympics \u2014 and an icon of Olympics marketing \u2014 was conceived by cartoonist and children\u2019s book illustrator Victor Chizhikov (1935\u20132020).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silver Pocket Knife Featuring Helsinki Olympic Stadium<\/h2>\n\n\n

Probably made for the 1952 Summer Olympics, this knife<\/a> sports an image of the Helsinki Olympic Stadium<\/a>, which hosted those games. The venue, designed by architects Yrj\u00f6 Lindegren and Toivo J\u00e4ntti and completed in 1938, was built to welcome the 1940 Summer Olympics, but that year\u2019s festivities were canceled amid the turmoil of World War II.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Walter Herz London Olympic Games Poster<\/h2>\n\n\n

Painter, illustrator and lawyer Walter Herz<\/a> (1909\u201365) fled Czechoslovakia when the Nazis invaded and settled in London, where he launched a commercial art studio. For this 1948 poster<\/a>, he layered renderings of the classical Discobolus of Myron, London\u2019s Palace of Westminster and the Olympic rings to forge a memorable image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Games of the XIV Olympiad were the first Summer Olympics held after the end of World War II, which had caused a 12-year hiatus in the event. Because of rationing and harsh postwar economic conditions, people called them the Austerity Games.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Photographer Marvin Newman<\/a> (1927\u20132023), a native New Yorker who studied with the renowned<\/a> Berenice Abbott<\/a>, captured the eighteen-year-old Cassius Clay<\/a>, later known as Muhammad Ali<\/a>, receiving the gold in light heavyweight boxing at the 1960 Summer Games in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his 20s, English painter and printmaker James Stroudley<\/a> (1906\u201385) received a scholarship to study in Rome. There, he developed the monumental sporting figures seen here. The large-scale 1930 oil on canvas<\/a> is one of several Stroudley works depicting Olympic athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although archery was not among the events in the 1928 Summer Olympics, Dutch artist Willem Jacob Rozendaal<\/a> (1899\u20131971), who is best known for his stained glass and woodcuts, featured the Greek centaur Chiron drawing his bow on this hand-painted plate<\/a> produced by Maastricht manufacturer N.V. De Sphinx to commemorate the Amsterdam games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Brooklyn-born<\/a> painter and sculptor Alex Katz<\/a> (1927\u2013 ) began making prints<\/a> in the mid-1960s. He was influenced by Japanese woodcuts<\/a> \u2014 and, in this 1976 editioned silkscreen<\/a>, perhaps inspired as well by the much-decorated U.S. men\u2019s swimming team, which took home the gold in 12 of 13 events at that year\u2019s Summer Games in Montreal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although many of his contemporaries in New York City became Abstract Expressionists<\/a>, John Button<\/a> (1929\u201382), who taught at the School of Visual Arts, remained a steadfast proponent of realism<\/a>. This vivid 1965 oil painting<\/a> was likely inspired by American swimmer Don Schollander<\/a>, who won four gold medals at the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When surfing made its debut as an Olympic sport in Tokyo in 2021, Brazilian surf star Gabriel Medina competed on this board<\/a>, which was shaped by S\u00e3o Paulo native Johnny Cabianca, the founder of Basque Country Surf Company in Zarautz, Spain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

French painter, illustrator and interior designer Octave Denis Victor Guillonnet<\/a> (1872\u20131967) designed this rare vase<\/a> for the famed porcelain factory Manufacture nationale de S\u00e8vres<\/a> to mark the 1924 Summer Olympics, held in Paris. Guillonnet created four different versions of the vessel, each depicting a different summer sport; only 309 pieces were produced in total. The hand-painted vases were awarded to gold medal winners at the games. One recipient was Johnny Weissmuller<\/a>, an American swimming champion who would later star in the Tarzan movies of the 1930s and \u201940s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
